A Survey Of Playgrounds And Playground Equipment In The Elementary Schools Of New Mexico, Richard V. Traylor

The purpose of this study is to determine what types of playgrounds and playground equipment are being used in the elementary schools of New Mexico and to compare and evaluate the size, placement, and serviceability of these facilities according to standards set forth by the National Recreation Association and other authorities.

This study is largely concerned with information and material gathered from the elementary schools in municipal systems within this state, but information from two independent rural schools will be used. Private and parochial schools will not be considered in this study.

Prior to the year 1913, there had been some schools at the Utah State Agricultural College that had had biological science, exact science, language and arts, and social science groups for the graduates to fill requirements in before they could graduate from these particular schools.

However, it was not until the year 1913 that all of the schools, with the exception of the engineering school, were required to make the students meet these basic group requirements.

A considerable number of leaders in education are seriously considering a limited extention of the educational program in the summer. The various churches conduct what are sometimes called vacation schools, some of which are conducted in mountain retreats, where they combine recreation and bible study classes. There is now a law in Utah which permits school districts to levy taxes to pay for organized public recreation programs. It was in the belief that a summary of the course content of state courses of study in health education would be of value and interest in the light of present trends in curriculum construction that this study was written.

The purpose of this investigation was to survey sixteen state courses of study compiled by their respective state education departments, to determine the details of content considered most essential in health education at the high school level.

For a period of twenty years beginning in 1918 when the writer became Superintendent of the Stockton Playground Department, annual reports of its major activities and accomplishments were made and submitted to the Mayor and later the City Manager for their information. They helped in securing the next budget. Throughout the thirty years of service additional reports of activities and improvements in facilities were kept on file in the office of the department for the information of its officers and a permanent record.

In some states physical education is not part of the curriculum but in others, such as California, it is required by law.
