Post-Concussion Symptom Score As A Possible Predictor Of Protracted Recovery In High School Athletes, Kimberly Dawn Phillips

Graduate Theses

As concussion research shifts from diagnostic to managing return to play (RTF), many studies have sought to establish safe guidelines for recovery. Computer-based neuropsychological programs measure cognitive function performance typically affected by brain injury and include a self-report post-concussion symptoms scale. The use of the total score of a post-concussion symptoms scale as a possible predictor of protracted recovery in high school athletes following injury is still being researched. This study used stored data obtained from the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center involving concussed high school athletes with a post-concussion symptom score and subsequent documentation of recovery time. A one-way ANOVA …

Attitudes Toward Psychotropic Medications Among Psychotropic Medications Among Psychiatric Outpatients And The General Population, Stephanie A. Fife

Graduate Theses

Attitudes and beliefs towards psychotropic medication were evaluated among psychiatric outpatients, patients seeking buprenorphine for substance abuse, and nonusers in a general population. The Drug Attitude Inventory scale (DAI-10) and the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire General (BMQ-G) were used to assess attitudes and beliefs of 49 participants. The general population had a negative attitude toward psychotropic medication and the psychiatric groups showed positive attitudes. Compliance and noncompliance were not associated with attitudes or beliefs toward psychotropic medication. Other findings include that females had less positive attitudes and beliefs towards psychotropic medication than males. The current findings expand and support research …

Physical Activity Preferences Of Elementary Children, Mike Griffis Apr 2005

Physical Activity Preferences Of Elementary Children, Mike Griffis

Graduate Theses

The current study investigated activity preferences of elementary-age students. It was hypothesized that gender differences would exist, with boys preferring competitive activities and girls preferring more cooperative activities. The results proved a significant relationship did exist between male students and activity type, as nearly 80 % of male students preferred competitive or elimination games over fitness and cooperative games. There was no significant relationship, however, between female students and activity type, as females didn’t show a preference between the two activity types. The present study also provides practical information for those physical educators wishing to avoid being gender-biased when designing …

The Effect Of Cooperative Games/Activities Involving Elementary Students On Cooperative Social Interaction, Karen S. Collins

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether Cooperative Games/Activities influenced children’s cooperative values and interdependence in the classroom. Twenty-seven boys and twenty-eight girls were assigned to three groups: two cooperative games/activities experimental groups and one control group. Each student was pretested using a Group Behavior and Atmosphere Scale. Following the pretests, students in the control group continued with their regular physical education activities and the experimental groups played cooperative games. Cooperative games were played twice a week, for six weeks, for an average of forty-five minutes. After six weeks, all students were retested to determine changes in behavior. …

Movement Education In A Modified Montessori Pre-School Classroom, Corinne Q. Evans

Graduate Theses

A movement education program was designed to see what effect such a program would have on the motor skills of three year old children. Movement tasks and skills were introduced to the class as a whole. The rationale of this program is based on the observations of Piaget, Montessori, Gisell, and other theorists. The lessons are divided into three major areas of Body Awareness, Directionality, and Basic Body Movements. The movement education program was presented to ten (10) three year old students; while six (6) other three year old students comprised the control group. Pre-and post-tests of movement skills were …

The Importance Of Physical Fitness: Physical Fitness Standards And Fitness Program Implementation, Ronald Gene Aaron May 1990

The Importance Of Physical Fitness: Physical Fitness Standards And Fitness Program Implementation, Ronald Gene Aaron

Graduate Theses

Due to the nature of law enforcement work, a large majority of an officer's time on the job is spent doing sedentary tasks. As a consequence, personnel develop a sedentary lifestyle which minimizes physical readiness and maximizes health risks. This paper examines the relationship existing between the over-all fitness level of a law enforcement agency and costs associated with absenteeism, major illnesses and civil liability, and suggests the need for a fitness program to be implemented at the Midland Police Department.

Progressive Tennis Skills Test Developed For College Physical Education Classes With Varying Levels Of Play, Joe M. Williams

Graduate Theses

The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a reliable, valid and objective skills test for college physical education tennis classes which had students of varying ability levels. The subjects (N=50) were randomly divided into two groups based on whether they were experienced or inexperienced players. The tennis skill variables tested were consistency, depth, serve, forehand, backhand, and volley. Stability reliability was estimated at .94 p<.05. Concurrent validity was estimated by correlating the average ratings of three experts with the first and second administrations of the test. Concurrent validity was estimated at .92 p<.05. Construct validity was estimated at the p<.05 level showing a significant difference in the two groups. Objectivity estimates were found to be p<.05 when the test was administered by another instructor. The Progressive Tennis Skills Test proved to be reliable, valid and objective for college physical education classes with students at varying ability levels.

The Effects Of Three Types Of Verbal Feedback On The Form And Accuracy Of A Tennis Volley, Sylvia Goethal

Graduate Theses

This study was designed to test the effects of three kinds of verbal feedback on the form and accuracy of a tennis forehand volley. Four groups (corrective, positive, positive-corrective, and control), each composed of ten eighth-grade female students, were given a pre-test, an appropriate treatment, and a post-test. During the pre- and post-tests, subjects were tested simultaneously for form and accuracy. Accuracy was measured by placement of the volleys into court sections marked with different point values. Form was determined by a panel of trained judges who compared the subjects' tennis volley with a form criterion sheet prepared by the …
