A Four-Stage Program Of Enrichment In Reading For Gifted Junior High School Students, Mina Winifred Welch

The needs of gifted students and strategies for meeting those needs were studied. A four- stage enrichment model was designed, accompanied by a teacher's guide for implementation of a sample application of the model at the seventh grade level. The four stages of enrichment activities included in the model were (1) exploratory activities beyond the regular curriculum, (2) activities to develop critical reading and thinking skills, (3) activities for improvement of information-gathering skills, and (4) a mentorship phase.

The purpose of this field study was to develop an enrichment program for the sixth grade students at Forsyth Grade School. The major areas of concern addressed in this study were:

  1. to arrive at a working definition of the gifted student.
  2. to analyze why the 1980-81 6th grade class, and Forsyth students in general, appear to score higher than average on achievement and I.Q. tests.
  3. to develop a means of identifying gifted students in the areas of math, science, and language arts.
  4. to assure an enrichment program that would meet the needs of these "gifted" students.

Differentiated curricula for gifted and talented students are necessities for any school district which purports to serve the educational needs of all of its student population. During the 1980-81 school year, the Mt. Zion School District, Mt. Zion, Illinois, conducted a thorough investigation and began a total revision of its district-wide gifted program. Using a systems analysis approach to problem solving, a selected committee of administrators and professional staff conducted a needs assessment in order to determine the actual value of its existing program. The North Clay Unit 25 school district began a gifted program in 1978. The new program was lacking in several areas. In August, 1980, the administrative staff in cooperation with Eastern Illinois University Department of School Service Personnel developed a position of administrative assistant-gifted coordinator. The gifted coordinator would administer and be responsible of gifted students and gifted staff.
