The Allocation Of Time And Goods: Three Essays On American Household Shopping Behavior, Jing Cai Dec 2010

The Allocation Of Time And Goods: Three Essays On American Household Shopping Behavior, Jing Cai

Dissertations

Consumers’ shopping behavior connects market goods expenditure with the out of- market time allocation in their daily time use. This study is composed of three essays. In the first essay, data are collected from the American Time Use Survey and it is found that an individual’s time devoted to shopping is positively determined by opportunity cost of time. Grocery shopping and other shopping, as two distinct types of shopping, react differently to a series of individual and household characteristics as well as by seasons. The corresponding marginal effects also differentiate between shopping time, leisure time, and home production time. In …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seventeen women between the ages of 25 and 54 who self-identified as having made a positive financial change within the past two years were interviewed in four focus groups. Participants were asked to identify their motivations for financial behavior change.

The analysis of this research data indicated the participants in this study progressed through the stages of change in Prochaska's Transtheoretical Model while making personal financial changes. Factors such as emotion, family influence, and life transition helped many women move from earlier stages (Precontemplation, Contemplation) to later stages (Preparation, Action) of change. Although participants utilized a wide variety of first …

Food Technology, Innovation And Teacher Education: Summary Of Survey Findings, Angela Turner

Angela Turner

This report presents a summary of findings from data collected during 2009 as part of a doctoral thesis entitled: A Critique of Food Technology, Innovation and Teacher Education: A Technacy Perspective of NSW Curriculum. The survey instrument collected information that sought to establish contemporary perceptions about the study of Food Technology in Australia and the role secondary education may play in ‘supplying’ people into professional studies towards a career as a food technologist. In this arrangement, the industry and profession of food technologists represent the ‘demand’ side of the process that starts with receiving students ‘supplied’ by the schools sector …

Housing Attribute Preferences In El Paso, Emmanuel Villalobos Jan 2010

Housing Attribute Preferences In El Paso, Emmanuel Villalobos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study uses twenty-two explanatory variables and a stratified random sample of 562 housing units to estimate a hedonic pricing model for the El Paso housing market. Previous studies report that structural characteristics are more influential than locational factors in home valuation. Results obtained indicate that list price reacts more elastically to a home's structural characteristics than to its locational factors. In this study indirect evidence of the importance of international commerce in El Paso is documented. Whether the results reported are unique to a large border economy like El Paso is unknown.
