Responsive Classroom Lessons For An Elementary Classroom, Emma Magnuski Aug 2022

Responsive Classroom Lessons For An Elementary Classroom, Emma Magnuski

Honors Program Theses and Projects

For my project, I created a curation website promoting social and emotional integration within the classroom with various lesson plans written for elementary-aged students. To create the final product, I reviewed research, developed lesson plans, and conducted a peer-review survey of the effectiveness of the finished product, to prepare a usable resource. I researched information about the responsive classroom, the Massachusetts Education standards, and the CASEL standards for the website and create the lesson plans. Once I published the website, which is available at: https://sites.google.com/view/honorsprojectselresources/home, I conducted the peer-review study.

Representation Of African American/Black Men Educators In K-12 Public Schools: Impact On Recruitment, Retention, And Responsibilities To Education, Tekyesha Gault Anderson

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Almost seven decades after the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v Board of Education decision, African American/Black men are still vastly underrepresented in the K-12 public education profession. For this qualitative, phenomenological research study, a small sample of this demographic of educators, who chose to enter and remain in the profession, shared their lived experiences. Three research questions informed this study: (1) What are African American/Black men’s perceptions of their representation in the K-12 public education profession? (2) What are African American/Black men’s perceptions regarding their entrance and retention in the K-12 public education profession? and (3)What are African American/Black men’s …

Integration Of Project-Based Learning In Elementary Social Studies, Arren Swift

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

The marginalization of social studies education in elementary schools has been well documented. To provide meaningful social studies education to elementary students we must find ways to integrate social studies into other content areas. The application of project-based learning complements the process of cross-curricular integration. This article provides a rationale for this approach and a sample lesson to help clarify the process.

Reconciling The Divide: Common Processes In Science And Arts Education, Lori A. Fulton, Jamie Simpson-Steele Nov 2016

Reconciling The Divide: Common Processes In Science And Arts Education, Lori A. Fulton, Jamie Simpson-Steele

The STEAM Journal

Many see the sciences and arts as two distinct fields – one objective the other subjective; however, we see the two having more in common than different. These commonalities formed the basis for a STEAM framework, which examines the intersections of five processes: noticing, wondering, visualizing, exploring, and communicating. This framed a professional development workshop on STEAM for elementary teachers. Here we define and explore these processes through both science and art perspectives, and share examples of how each of these processes were integrated to support learning. We believe that STEAM provides a well-rounded experience, allowing learners to make connections …

Comparison Of Beginning Teachers' And Experienced Teachers' Readiness To Integratetechnology As Measured By Tpack Scores, Heather S. Fontanilla

Dissertations

Despite a growing awareness of the importance of technology in education, increased investment and attention to preparing teachers to integrate technology into the classroom, research shows that technology continues to fail to live up to its potential for transforming education. As schools move from standards based testing to implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), an expectation exists that teachers will be using technology to transform their teaching practices. There is also an expectation that schools are providing students with 21st century skills, including the use of technology. In exploring the reasons teachers are not using technology effectively, much …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Influence Of Professional Development On Music Integration, Marcy Thurmond Simmons Jan 2015

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Influence Of Professional Development On Music Integration, Marcy Thurmond Simmons

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

International Baccalaureate (IB) schools are focused on a school-wide approach to developing inquiring students who are motivated to succeed. The problem explored in this case study was based on a local IB elementary school's response to a reform model to integrate music into other content areas. The curriculum lacked an interdisciplinary approach to music education even though teachers had participated in some professional development (PD) to help them integrate music into content areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of elementary teachers regarding the influence of professional development on music integration at the IB elementary school. …

Music To Their Ears: How Playing Music In The Elementary Classroom Affects Behavior And Motivation, Lauren Fischer

Leah A. Nillas

The purpose of this study is to find how music affects students’ behavior and motivation in an elementary school classroom. A fourth grade class that regularly uses music served as the study group. Interviews with the teacher were also conducted. It is expected that results will show that music has a positive impact on both behavior and motivation. According to a study done by Robin Lock in 2006, music played in the classroom can stimulate brain function and promote motivation. Also, Chalmers, Olson, and Zurkowski (1999) found that the number of behavior problems in an elementary school cafeteria decreased when …
