Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of school that does not get enough attention. Many teachers are currently focused on academics instead of how their students are handling the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning. The focus issue addressed in this capstone project is SEL in the online classroom during COVID-19. An argument is made that distance learning causes a higher rate of mental health problems in students in all grade levels. One will most readily agree that visual arts have been set aside from the everyday instructional curriculum that teachers use at the elementary school level. Contrarily, numerous evidences suggest that visual arts have an important role in elementary schools and can significantly benefit students’ academic performance. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of visual arts on elementary school students through the use of literature review from scholarly sources, anonymous online teacher surveys, and in-person teacher interviews. Elementary students, their peers, and teachers today are being affected by emotional and behavioral issues that some students struggle with at school. This research paper reviews the qualifications of a “Highly Qualified Teacher” as described by the No Child Left Behind Act that was published in 2001. Further research was done to determine if these qualifications were sufficient enough to qualify a teacher as “highly qualified”. A number of scholarly reviewed articles and journals were analyzed to dictate augmented qualities that should be premeditated when considering an applicant as highly qualified. There is a lack of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ+) representation in elementary school curriculum. This deficit leads to a lack of understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, limited gender role diversity, and a predisposition to teasing and anti-gay bullying among children. Therefore, I created a two-day lesson for kindergarteners at Del Rey Woods Elementary in Seaside, California. Participants were evaluated before, during, and after the sessions. Results showed an increase in understanding and acknowledging LGBTQ+ families.
