The purpose of this field study is to develop a program in career education in Community Unit #4, Oblong, Illinois.

It is the belief of this author that elementary career education should have a new thrust because of the closing of the rural schools. In September of 1977, Oblong Grade School will be the only attendance center in the community.

Instructional media is usually used as a supplement to verbal and printed instruction. It is used for the purpose of illustration, exemplification, motivation, and for clarification. Filmstrips, 16mm films, charts, maps, and still pictures, library books, and resource units help students understand their social world.

No one teaching tool reaches the set goals in Social Studies classes. A comparison of different types of media effectiveness in improving student interest, in stimulating class discussion, and in helping to fix vocabulary is the goal of this study.

I started this project to improve the teaching of conservation and ecology in the Findlay Grade School. I wanted more than a paper project. I wanted a workable program that would improve the education of the students and a program that would promote better understanding of conservation and ecology. I wanted more teaching to be ecology oriented.

The students of the Findlay Grade School needed more information, and a better understanding of how our natural resources affect their lives. The students also needed a purpose for conservation. This purpose could only come through better education in the field of conservation. …

A basic understanding of the local community will help elementary students (kindergarten through sixth grade) continue to expand their social science concepts in the modern, rapidly-changing world.
