This action research study aimed to analyze the impact of direct social-emotional lessons on students' emotional intelligence in a Montessori upper elementary classroom. This study explored the impact of combining social-emotional vocabulary with social-emotional learning (SEL) skill development. The study used quantitative and qualitative data, including pre- and post-assessments, follow-up work, observation logs, and SEL elements added to the students’ weekly work plans. SEL curriculum materials and follow-up work were created for this study following the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework and their SAFE acronym: sequenced, active, focused, and explicit. The Impact Of Role-Play On The Self-Regulation Of Preschoolers Following The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jennifer Myers

This Action Research Project examined the impact of role-play on preschoolers’ self-regulation development in a Montessori primary classroom. The class consisted of 18 students; ages 3-5 years old. Four of the nine students in the intervention had delays, disruptions, or modifications to their Montessori experience, possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Role-play scenarios were performed by the students for four weeks. The results show that role-play positively impacted self-regulation in the primary classroom. The average percentage of self-regulated behaviors increased by 28.5% from the pre-intervention week through the last intervention week. The purpose of this study was to determine if using social-emotional tools, strategies, and curriculums could help students with academic achievement and focus. This action research aimed to evaluate the effects of music and movement on learning sight words. This study occurred in a public Montessori classroom in a metropolitan area in Minnesota. There were 19 students, ages 4-6, and 10 targeted sight words. Students viewed Jan Richardson and Jack Hartmann’s Sight Word Music videos during the 6-week intervention. In each video, students were encouraged to dance, move, sing, and follow the instructions of the musician. Baseline and post-assessment data, student attitude surveys, video observations, and student activity worksheets were collected and evaluated from 10 kindergarten students. The Effects Of Phonics Instruction On Reading Fluency In An Elementary Classroom, Jill Belrose

This action research study aimed to determine the impacts of daily explicit phonics instruction and the impacts on reading fluency levels in a first-grade classroom. The intervention took place over ten weeks and included whole and small-group phonics instruction and independent practice. Seventeen six and seven-year-olds in a suburban elementary school participated in multisensory phonics activities for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Data was collected using seasonal benchmark assessments, teacher observations, and student self-reflections. Findings suggest that explicit phonics instruction increased reading fluency scores, but not significant enough to say it was the sole reason. Further research is needed to …

The purpose of this research study was to explore the impact of multicultural culinary arts food preparation activities on food neophobia in the Montessori lower elementary classroom. The research study took place over three weeks in a public charter Montessori school, located in St. Louis, MO. Children ages 6-9 years old from one classroom participated in the study. The intervention strategy, based on Social Cognitive Theory, implemented key experience lessons, cosmic stories, and mindful eating strategies. This action research aimed to determine the impacts of makerspaces and design thinking on student perceptions of creativity. The study occurred in a rural North Dakota third-grade classroom during science instruction. There were two sections of 17 and 18 students, respectively. Students participated in makerspace activities, including designing and constructing their own paper house or school. Data was collected through pre- and post-surveys, an adjective checklist, and teacher observations of student behavior. Pre-assessment findings suggest students had a relatively positive view of creativity before the intervention. Findings suggest student perceptions of creativity improved following the intervention. I conducted a research project at my elementary school. The action research question was how does repeated reading affect reading comprehension in the elementary classroom? The six-week study included third-grade elementary students. To study the impact of repeated reading, students read a fluency sheet for one minute, taking turns. Each week, a comprehension quiz was administered to students to measure their comprehension of the fluency passage read for the week. The study showed that repeated reading had a positive effect on fluency. However, the data failed to show that repeated reading does affect comprehension. More research is needed to confirm …
