The Effects Of Bullying On Elementary Students, Renee E. Bullerman
The Effects Of Bullying On Elementary Students, Renee E. Bullerman
Graduate Research Papers
Bullying is an ever-present problem occurring within elementary schools across the world. Bullying creates personal, social and emotional, as well as academic problems for the victim. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the various interventions that are implemented in elementary schools in order to combat the effects of bullying. Internal and external characteristics of victims, bullies, and bystanders will be identified. Gender differences related to bullying will be described, as well the effects bullying has on elementary students. Finally, numerous interventions aimed at reducing the effects of bullying will be discussed.
Vocabulary Development Through Math Journaling Using Technology Resources In An Elementary Math Classroom, Debbie Hansel
Vocabulary Development Through Math Journaling Using Technology Resources In An Elementary Math Classroom, Debbie Hansel
Graduate Research Papers
An action research study was conducted in a second grade classroom in a nonpublic elementary school with student seven-to-eight years of age. The purpose of the research was to determine if the use of computer-based content journaling leads to a better understanding of the mathematical vocabulary being focused on and to establish if the use of computer-based reflective journal entries has a positive impact on the students' attitude toward mathematics.
The comparison of scores from the pre-assessment and post-assessment of vocabulary knowledge demonstrated an increase in accuracy. Journaling helped students arrive at the generalization relating the size of what is …
Empowering Families From The Start: Kindergarten Family Nights, Melissa M. Teggatz
Empowering Families From The Start: Kindergarten Family Nights, Melissa M. Teggatz
Graduate Research Papers
There are more two parent working families and single parent families in the 21st century than in any other time period in our history. With this increase in demands put on parents, their children's education is increasingly left to the teachers and faculty the children encounter at school. For children to receive the best education possible, families and educators must therefore work together. This research project examined ways to help families and kindergarten teachers meet the needs of children. One important way is through developing and implementing two developmentally appropriate, hands-on, family night events at a middle class school district …
Implementing Bibliotherapy: Noah & Friends, Ryan Ealy
Implementing Bibliotherapy: Noah & Friends, Ryan Ealy
Graduate Research Papers
For this project, I have decided to write a series of short stories. It is titled Noah and Friends. These stories will teach students about diversity, peer pressure, and role models. Reading stories can be used as a great therapeutic tool as well a unique way to teach and a fun way for students to learn. Through reading stories students can learn about themselves through characters in books that are dealing with conflicts similar to what they are currently experiencing. This allows them to gain insight about their problems as well as learn different solutions they could try to solve …
Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams
Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams
Open Educational Resources
A study was conducted with forty-seven preservice childhood (elementary) education teachers (42 F, 5 M) enrolled in two mathematics methods classes taught by the same instructor to determine the effect of these college students making curriculum materials appropriate for upper elementary students on the preservice teachers' knowledge of numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement. A Mathematical Mystery Object Box is a box containing a set of objects with corresponding clue cards. The student reads the mathematical clues addressing numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement and attempts to locate the object that satisfies them, checking work with the picture of the correct object …
Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan
Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan
Open Educational Resources
Background: Multiplication and division by fractions are among the most troublesome concepts in the elementary mathematics curriculum. Recent studies have shown that preservice elementary teachers in the United States do not have deep understandings of these concepts. Effective ways to improve preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of these concepts need to be identified. Citation: Rule, A. C., & Hallagan, J., editors. (2006). Preservice elementary teachers use drawings and make sets of materials to explain multiplication and division by fractions. A research study presented at the 2nd Annual Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) Conference at Oswego, New York, June 6, 2006. …
Family, Child, Teacher Perceptions Of What African American Adult Family Members Think And Do To Assist Their Elementary School-Aged Children To Become Better Readers, Shadrack Gabriel Msengi
Family, Child, Teacher Perceptions Of What African American Adult Family Members Think And Do To Assist Their Elementary School-Aged Children To Become Better Readers, Shadrack Gabriel Msengi
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In this study, the perceptions were investigated of how African American adult family members, children, and teachers viewed the family members' roles in assisting their elementary school-aged children to become better readers. These perceptions were explored to provide a detailed account of ideas that can impact the home-school relationship. To conduct this study, the researcher examined how similar or different the perceptions were among the three subgroups regarding: (a) the child's reading level; (b) what families do to assist children in reading; and (c) the perceived barriers and opportunities in adult family members' decisions to assist their children to become …
There Are No Winners Here: Teacher Thinking And Student Underachievement In The 6th Grade, Sue L. Pettit
There Are No Winners Here: Teacher Thinking And Student Underachievement In The 6th Grade, Sue L. Pettit
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The following ethnographic study was conducted with 6th grade teachers in a middle school that has been stigmatized by the public as a failing school and cited by the government as a School in Need of Assistance according to the No Child Left Behind Act. The purpose of the study was to examine what teachers believe about persistent underachievement in order to shed light on whether teacher beliefs inform teachers' efforts to ameliorate underachievement. As my study progressed, my research data suggested that teachers use a faulty testing curriculum that guarantees poor student performance and only serves to confirm …

School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports : An Evaluation Of An Elementary School Program, Lisa Andreasen
School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports : An Evaluation Of An Elementary School Program, Lisa Andreasen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The outcomes of a school-wide positive behavior support program at a rural elementary school were evaluated to determine the effects of a school-wide program on the behavior of students. A program evaluation was conducted using student office referrals that were collected over a six year period. The results indicated that student office referrals significantly decreased from Year 1 to Year 6 and that specific behaviors of aggression and inappropriate language also decreased significantly from Year 1 to Year 6. Data were investigated to indicate trends in total office referrals by gender, grade, month, location, and problem behavior.
