Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition Projects

Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

Analysis Of Engineering Students Learning Styles On Level 7, Level 8 And Level 9 Programmes, Aidan O'Dwyer

This contribution reports on research, carried out over three academic years, into the learning styles of engineering students, on a number of Level 7, Level 8 and Level 9 programmes at DIT, using the index of learning styles survey developed by Felder and Soloman (1991). The contribution explores the results obtained in detail, placing them particularly in the national context. The correlation between student performance and individual learning styles is examined. Knowledge of the strongly visual learning style of these cohorts of students may be used to improve the learning environment.

Each student in his or her senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. This contribution evaluates the use of multiple-choice questions, in both formative and summative assessment modes, on advanced modules taken by Level 8 and Level 9 engineering students, over the past two academic years. In a fundamental electrical engineering laboratory course, the traditional team based approach to laboratory structure with two or more members per lab team was not as effective for teaching basic laboratory skills and knowledge as a lab structure that allowed students to perform laboratory exercises individually throughout the semester. The laboratory report was insensitive and insufficient to measure the difference in the laboratory abilities and knowledge from these two groups. In order to assess the students' laboratory knowledge and abilities, it was necessary to develop a new assessment instrument that would be sufficient for this purpose. The students' performance on …
