Educational technology has the benefit of creating active learning environments in both online and face-to-face classrooms. With the globalization of education, numerous educational tools and resources have been developed to create authentic learning experiences in the classroom. These tools can vary from web-based collaboration tools, such as Google Docs and VoiceThread, to a video tool such as FlipGrid. Such technology can be used in both live (synchronous) or online (asynchronous) classroom settings. With so many options, understanding how to select tools and how they can be integrated into instruction is important and thus is the focus of this entry.

To provide students with a situated learning experience that encouraged them to develop creative design solutions, the authors created a service-learning activity that required industrial technology students to apply design principles and procedures to design and develop toys to be given to pediatric patients at a local children's hospital. This paper presents a case study on creating a backchannel through Twitter for the live event, featuring the Secretary of the US Navy, hosted by the School of Government. The project, which ultimately was successful in creating social media buzz for the lecture, was a new approach for the School of Government in how it markets its events. The study discusses the tools and processes used in the backchannel's creation and development.
