The Effect Of Microlearning And Multimedia Design On Knowledge And Skills Acquisition Of Students In E-Courses, Rene Corbeil, Didem Tufan, Maria Elena Corbeil

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although the term microlearning has been around since 2005 (Hug, 2005), its use, and research in the area, have resurged in recent years as adult learners have become increasingly more mobile and must deal with competing work, family, and educational priorities. Today’s learners, in both formal and informal academic and corporate learning environments, can benefit from microlearning’s smaller, single objective lessons that can be consumed quickly and easily. However, there are many variations of microlearning and ideas on how to create the instructional materials they include. While it may seem simple, the development process requires applying instructional design strategies and …

Developing Instructional Technology Standards For Educators: A Design-Based Research Study, Helen Crompton, Carolyn Sykora

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Digital technologies are key tools that can be used to extend and enhance teaching and learning. However, empirical evidence show educators are unclear how to integrate technology and it is often used to support past teaching practices. Designbased research (DBR) involving a grounded theory design was used to construct a set of seven detailed education technology standards to provide guidance on how technology should be integrated and a set of 24 examples as indicators of these standards. This DBR mixed methods approach involved 2429 participants and gathered data from focus groups, surveys, and interviews. The DBR involved two macro cycles …

“Technology Is Great, But It’S Really Time-Consuming:” Understanding Students’ Digital Academic Lives, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale

Publications and Research

Digital technology has become integral to higher education, incorporated by colleges and universities into teaching, student support and operations. We know that undergraduates lead busy lives, especially those attending commuter universities, and that they bring their prior experiences with technology with them into their college careers. However, while technology access and use in our everyday lives and workplaces has increased in the past few decades, it is not as ubiquitous as we might wish, and our students do encounter barriers to learning and connecting with digital technologies.

We draw on our decade of research on the experiences of CUNY undergraduate …

Using Computer-Aided Design Software And 3d Printers To Improve Spatial Visualization, Petros Katsioloudis, Millie Jones

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Many articles have been published on the use of 3D printing technology. From prefabricated homes and outdoor structures to human organs, 3D printing technology has found a niche in many fields, but especially education. The education of technology and engineering students has come a long way from traditional instruction using hand drawings. Although drawings may still be a part of a students learning, computer technology has been embraced in this field for several years. With the introduction of AutoCAD technical drawing programs and now 3D printing, learners can use 3D printed models to develop their spatial abilities in technology and …

(First paragraph) The blogging has, I don’t want to say forced, but kind of made me read books that I haven’t necessarily read before, and I don’t think I would have. I’ve read lots of children’s books just through student teaching and everything, but it makes me look outside the box and maybe at other genres that I wouldn’t look at necessarily. Designing Electronic Casebooks That Talk Back: The Cato Program, Kevin D. Ashley Jan 2000

Designing Electronic Casebooks That Talk Back: The Cato Program, Kevin D. Ashley

Articles

Electronic casebooks offer important benefits of flexibility in control of presentation, connectivity, and interactivity. These additional degrees of freedom, however, also threaten to overwhelm students. If casebook authors and instructors are to achieve their pedagogical goals, they will need new methods for guiding students. This paper presents three such methods developed in an intelligent tutoring environment for engaging students in legal role-playing, making abstract concepts explicit and manipulable, and supporting pedagogical dialogues. This environment is built around a program known as CATO, which employs artificial intelligence techniques to teach first-year law students how to make basic legal arguments with cases. …

Evaluating The Integration Of Learning Technology In Queensland State Schools: A Case Study Of The Queensland Sunrise Centre, Glenn D. Finger

Digital learning research

This thesis provides information, implications, and recommendations, derived from an evaluation of the Queensland Sunrise Centre (QSC), which will assist educational policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation strategies for integrating learning technology into the school curriculum. In addition, the thesis makes a theoretical contribution to school level evaluations through the development, implementation, and appraisal of an evaluation model based on fourth generation evaluation (4GB) principles by directly involving stakeholders in the evaluation process. The establishment of the Queensland Sunrise Centre (QSC) in 1990 involved the creation of innovative technology-rich learning environments for students and teachers in which each of them had …

Learning With Personal Computers: Issues, Observations And Perspectives, Helga A.H. Rowe, Irene Brown, Isabel Lesman

Digital learning research

The empirical study discussed in this book was conducted in the Sunrise classrooms at Coombabah State School, Queensland in 1991-92, in which each student had their own laptop computer. Part I provides a theoretical framework for learning and teaching with computers. Part II deals with issues relating to the acquisition of computer literacy. Part III describes the empirical study conducted with 115 Year 6 and Year 7 students, and Part IV deals with issues relating to the professional development of teachers who teach students with computers and with the evaluation of computer software by teachers.
