The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to examine affordances of literacy tabletop games in a preschool classroom environment as well as the experiences of young children between the ages of 3 and 6 and teachers playing the games. American students have continuously performed lower than students from other countries on multiple different standardized tests. New methods of teaching students are needed in order to help American students to develop a deeper understanding of the math curriculum. This article focuses on the impact that using board games as scaffolds has on student goal orientation. It is proposed that implementing the use of board games as scaffolds appropriately, and according to effective scaffold design framework, the games will support mastery goal orientation and a deep understanding of the concepts. Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee

This paper examines the idea that contemporary strategic board games represent an informal, interactional context in which complex computational thinking takes place. When games are collaborative – that is, a game requires that players work in joint pursuit of a shared goal – the computational thinking is easily observed as distributed across several participants. This raises the possibility that a focus on such board games are profitable for those who wish to understand computational thinking and learning in situ.
