After attending the Effective Teaching Practices course through the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), teaching a class, large or small, has become more satisfying and enjoyable. Due to my ACUE experience, my teaching style continues to evolve. I’ve become more attuned to student dynamics. As instructors, we have the power to facilitate our classes in many effective ways, and ACUE offers teaching strategies that are based on research. I proactively have been implementing many of the techniques I have learned in ACUE, and I have noticed a significant increase in my students’ engagement in class discussions and activities. …

An exploratory study was launched to redress a gap in the literature that is expressed as an assumption that "most" college instructors grade participation in undergraduate courses. A sample of 521 instructors at a large, northeastern public university was surveyed to assess their attitudes and practices in grading participation in undergraduate courses of 50 students or less. A survey instrument was developed for the purpose of this study and subjected to principal components analysis, and this instrument yielded 7 subscales of acceptable reliability (Cronbach's alpha ≥ .70). The Scholarship Of Teaching: Contributing Factors To Improved Teaching Performance Among University Faculty Members, Whitney Ransom

This thesis brings a much-needed focus on the quality and scholarship of teaching as it pertains to educational and faculty development. The main purpose of this paper is to outline what more than 200 faculty members across a wide variety of disciplines have focused on over a three-year period to make significant (a 1.5 standard deviation increase or higher in online student ratings) and sustained improvements in their teaching. The top three factors of improvement include active/practical learning, teacher/student interactions, and clear expectations/learning outcomes.
