This study examines the effects of a longitudinal patient experience on the enhancement of empathy in first and second year students attending Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC). The Longitudinal Educational Experience Advancing Patient Partnerships (LEAP) is a new required program at WCMC. Entering Medical students are matched with chronically ill patients whom they will follow throughout medical school. One of the objectives of the LEAP program is to create an experience that will create more empathic medical students. Background. Empathy is a crucial means through which diversity is appreciated. Applying inclusivity at a young age and throughout the education curriculum is optimal for social and emotional development alongside academic development. Method. Nineteen students in Grade 5 participated in the language arts curriculum Shakespeare Can be Fun. Writing samples were collected before and after the perspective taking lesson and coded for empathy. Results. Independent t-tests comparing the pre-post writing categories of Organization, Creativity, Voice and Affect, and Grammar generated no significant results. Further t-tests were conducted within Voice and Affect and the item identifying Evidence for Empathy was significant. …

Abstract:

This study aims to investigate the predicting ability for mindfulness in empathy skills of a sample of students at the University of Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi and Al Ain branch). To achieve the study goals researchers used a mindfulness scale which consisted of four subscales (observation, Describing, act with awareness, accept without judgement), and empathy scale consisting of four subscales (fantasy, perspective-taking, empathy concern, personnel distress), with (400) male and female student samples from the University of Abu Dhabi.
