Instructional designers, instructional systems designers, and other educational technologists are, by their nature, innovators. These professionals apply and extend the applied science of learning, systems, communication, and instructional design theory to help students learn. Technology in some capacity is used to make the connections between subject matter experts, teachers, instructors, and their learners. It is common for instructional designers to seek new tools, techniques, and innovations for the improvement of learning, access, quality, and student satisfaction. However, the adoption and diffusion of new educational technology and innovation is a complex process that depends on many variables. Understanding these processes and …

Interactive Neuroscience: Designing And Implementing Web-Based Simulations To Teach Cognitive Neuroscience Concepts In An Online Classroom A Pilot Study, Kendall Stewart

Honors Theses

While computer simulations are effective tools when learning difficult concepts, little is currently known about the most effective learning environment for the implementation of computer simulations in the classroom. The current study aimed to determine if the effectiveness of simulations depends on the learning environment in which they are implemented. Tested within various passive and active learning environments, this study begins to shed light on the impact of the instructional method in which simulations are implemented on learning outcomes for novice learners. Results from this study suggest that within passive learning environments, simulated animations may be more effective than informationally …

Changing Social Learning Theory Through Reliance On The Internet Of Things And Artificial Intelligence, Adam I. Attwood

Journal of Sustainable Social Change

This paper examines the trend in the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and related computer-mediated teaching and learning. Implications for social learning theory are examined based on the concept of “cyborg” education through a variety of scholarly and popular media sources with implications for schools and teacher educators. Recommendations for teacher education are posited as the topic of technological mediation between people continues to change in relation to how education will likely need to adapt to provide a prosocial environment through technological mediation, though the social learning itself operates in different ways.

Effects Of A Computer-Based Simulation On Chemistry Self-Efficacy, Yolanta V. Kornak-Bozza

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Self-efficacy (SE) is a measure of belief in a person’s own ability to complete a task and reach a certain goal (Bandura, 2006). It is a significant area in the field of educational psychology because it can be used to predict performance in the area being measured. Chemistry represents a challenging field of study although the skills learned from it are necessary to move forward in STEM (Luzzo, Hasper, Albert, Bibby, Martinelli, 1999). It is not uncommon for students to enter this course with feelings of low SE. Increasing SE could result in improved educational outcomes and have a long- …

A Survey Of School Psychology Faculty Members' Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes Regarding Distance Education And Distance Education Technologies, Tonya C. Chacón

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research suggests that availability and use of distance education (DE) and distance education technologies (DET, i.e., technological applications) are growing at a prolific rate. Excitement over new technologies stems from their potential to develop new ways of teaching and learning. Yet, whereas the infrastructure necessary to support DE and DET exists, pedagogical applications have not kept pace. A major reason cited in the literature for limited use of DE and DET is mainstream faculty leadership and willingness to adopt these applications. While faculty members have expertise in content and pedagogy, DE and DET adoption may require greater technological competence. In …

Using Live Modeling To Train Preservice Teachers To Integrate Technology Into Their Teaching, Richard Edward West Mar 2005

Using Live Modeling To Train Preservice Teachers To Integrate Technology Into Their Teaching, Richard Edward West

Theses and Dissertations

Many researchers feel that teacher preparation programs are not doing enough to prepare teachers to effectively use technology. The result is a plethora of teachers who may know the basic functions of different programs, but who are unprepared to integrate these skills into their teaching. One method used by a few preservice programs, including BYU's, is the use of modeling sessions, otherwise referred to as live modeling. In these modeling sessions, the instructor models for the preservice teachers how a K-12 teacher could teach with technology, while the preservice teachers participate as if they were K-12 students. This thesis is …
