Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) represent types of childhood trauma that are associated with long-term negative effects on health and wellbeing. An elevated number of ACEs can lead to depression, suicidality, alcoholism, and substance use. Factors that can protect a person from increased health risks include resilience, which is broadly defined as the ability to bounce back from adversity. Few studies have analyzed the exposure of ACEs in medical students, however, there is extensive literature on how low levels of resilience are linked to higher rates of depression, fatigue, and burnout among medical students. Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand how youth, caregivers, and community professionals perceive family strengths and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in their community. Specifically, this study was focused on the protective role of caregivers and families, positive youth development, and how Native American families and families living in poverty support adolescents’ social–emotional development and help them thrive in the face of adversity.

Background: Research documents the concerning rates and negative outcomes of ACEs. However, very little research has examined the views of families and professionals on how to prevent ACES among these populations.

This thesis examines the literature on childhood trauma, its manifestations in the classroom, and effective trauma-informed teaching practices. The literature indicates the widespread prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the consequences these experiences have on both the developing brains of children and future health risks. While drawing the correlation of this widespread trauma to its common manifestations in the classroom, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs further justifies the indispensable link of safety preceding learning.
