Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources

Slides from a faculty workshop organized by the Central Pennsylvania Consortium, held at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. In this talk I discuss how to use findings from the NGLC grant-funded study of blended learning at 40 liberal arts colleges and related pedagogical and cognitive science research to develop effective blended courses. Some of the topics covered include the "testing effect," spacing learning learning over time, feedback, and metacognition.

Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT ) is a successful campus-wide course redesign and faculty development program at Purdue University. This session shows how blended course redesign is a potential catalyst for institutional change and demonstrates its effects on learning gains, including critical thinking, problem solving, and information literacy. The discussion focuses on the nuts and bolts of the innovative staff development and course redesign integral to IMPACT. A dramatic, pedagogical shift has occurred in recent years in educational environments in higher education, supported largely by the use of ubiquitous technologies. Increasingly, emphasis is being placed on the design of new learning spaces, often referred to as "Next Generation Learning Spaces" (NGLS) and their impact on pedagogy. El presente ensayo examina el papel de la tecnología en el aula de español como lengua extranjera (ELE) y la incorporación de sistemas de gestión de aprendizaje (LMS). Varios estudios sugieren que la combinación de la formación presencial con la instrucción virtual lleva a mejores resultados que esas formas implementadas individualmente. Se intenta aplicar esos estudios generales al aula ELE. Eso permite que los estudiantes tengan un rol más activo en su aprendizaje. Más que nadie, los estudiantes ELE deben recibir aducto para poder aprender. Con un LMS, no solamente reciben aducto en clase, sino también lo reciben en Internet. …
