The purpose of this study is to show that we are recognizing and learning ways to cope with the problem; namely: how to return the use of time, space, numbers, and content to those who need it--the teachers and their students--in even the larger schools that symbolize so well our concept of education for all youth. We are also learning how to cope with an equally important additional problem; how to treat a pupil as an individual even though he is one in a great mass of students. Many programs, some old and some new, are finding their way into the elementary school for the purpose of individualizing instruction. As more research is completed in the areas of individual differences, more experimentation and change are the results. Attempts to individualize instruction seem to fall into two categories. The organization and structure of schools and school programs is one area where changes have been made, based on research, to better serve the individual.
