In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), qualitative research methods are infrequently employed, as researchers in the region are more accustomed to quantitative approaches, with a certain hesitancy to embrace qualitative methodology. This research endeavor focuses on exploring the impediments faced by individuals engaged in qualitative research within the Saudi context. To do so, I conducted semi-structured interviews with eight doctoral students and employed a qualitative case study design for this paper. Utilizing the MAXQDA software, I also applied thematic analysis to the data gathered from the interviews. Purpose: The purpose of this study was two-fold and consisted of the development of a skills-based model for Case-by-Collaboration (CBC) and the collection of qualitative data from students and teachers aimed at answering the research question: What skills do individuals (students) apply during the completion of a hypothetical medical laboratory management-based Case-by-Collaboration capstone project? Competency-based education (CBE) is an increasingly popular instructional model in K-12 schools. In this qualitative case study, we examine how teachers make sense of CBE, and what challenges they in implementing a CBE model. We find that CBE teachers’ teaching identities had to undergo a shift to truly engage in CBE. Rather than acting as conveyors and assessors of knowledge, teachers had to construct their classrooms in a way that engaged and supported students in owning their own learning. We also found that educators face challenges around time, communication, and alignment.

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This qualitative case study consisted of social justice interactive field-based experiential learning activities designed to understand community partnerships between a university and local public school. The research question was: How can interactive field-based activities build closer community ties? The theoretical foundation incorporated Ken Zeichner’s “hybrid spaces” with the premise of field-based interactive experiences. The findings indicated the need for further activities that create partnerships between teacher education programs and neighboring public schools.
