Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find how gamification of the classroom would affect middle school students in a northern suburban school district in Minnesota. This work was designed to find if student proficiency would increase because of gamification and if students would become engaged with the classroom material due to its implementation. Using three classes taught in this new setting and two classes taught in the standard of past years, test scores were measured and studied to find significant changes along with a survey to the gamified classes about their experience regarding engagement. Gamification, or the use of game-based mechanics and thinking in real world applications, is on the rise in educational environments. While various applications seek to increase engagement and motivation for tasks related to student success, research regarding best practices for the design of such systems is lacking. In fact, conflicting outcomes from various gamification studies at the secondary and tertiary education levels suggest that not all gamification designs are effective for increasing student success. Esta investigación fue realizada en el Colegio Empresarial Los Andes de Facatativá Cundinamarca. Se trabajó con grado cuarto durante los tres primeros bimestres del año escolar 2018. La pregunta de investigación fue: ¿Cómo mediante el uso de recursos lúdicos es posible estimular y desarrollar la producción oral en el proceso de aprendizaje de inglés en los estudiantes de cuarto grado?
