The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether there is justification in retaining children with the intention of improving their academic achievement. It was hypothesized that when students are retained they do not make academic gains as great as matched students of like abilities who are promoted.

The present study has dealt with the problem of the "non-effects" of nonpromotion--a practice which continues because many educators and parents are convinced that grade repetition will help the immature or underachieving child "catch up."
