Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

School counselors are uniquely positioned within the P-12 education system to ensure that all students meet developmental needs in academic, career, and social-emotional areas in order to become successful and contributing members of society. School counselors collaborate with other school staff and parents/caregivers to ensure that students finish high school and are well-equipped for the challenges of the future.

Because students who experience even one suspension as early as seventh grade show an increased likelihood of dropping out of high school, it is important to explore ways that schools can effectively decrease the chance that a student will receive behavior …

Letter From The Editor, Jim Palermo

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

While the move from my chair as Managing Editor to Chief wasn’t far physically, it is a huge leap for me in part because my colleague and partner in this enterprise of JOEL, Founding Editor Steve Bingham, set the bar so high. Steve served the nascent Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership admirably as Editor in Chief through three years and six issues as we grew this small journal and explored the niche of leader/practitioner scholarship and the nexus of educational and organizational leadership. In those six issues we have explored topics such from principal preparation programs to Confucian values …

Training The Whole Counselor: Qualitative Analyses Of Professional School Counselor Training In Central Virginia, Jason W. Fleshman

The profession of school counseling is a dynamic one that has endured the evolving American educational landscape for over 100 years. This changing landscape has contributed to a sense of role confusion for professional school counselors in the United States. With much variation among states, school divisions, and even schools within the same division regarding the appropriate role of the professional school counselor, the research attempted to determine professional school counselor perceptions of their division-level and building-level training for their ASCA-defined inappropriate responsibilities in four school divisions in central Virginia. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the research studied the lived …

School Counselor Training: Differentiated Site Supervision Based On Prior Work Experiences, Rachel Loving Nov 2012

School Counselor Training: Differentiated Site Supervision Based On Prior Work Experiences, Rachel Loving

Theses and Dissertations

Over a decade after the regulation change in Virginia allowing individuals without teaching experience to pursue school counseling careers, no known study had focused exclusively on differences site supervisors observe when training school counselors from different professional backgrounds and the extent to which those counselors employ a tailored supervision approach in the clinical setting. While site supervisor training has been an area of interest in recent articles (e.g., Dollarhide & Miller, 2006), its relationship to supervision philosophies and technique differentiation has not been previously addressed. The researcher investigated those topics using a mixed-method research design shaped by suggestions from recent …
