Student And Teacher Attitudes Toward Giftedness In A Two Laboratory School Environment: A Case For Conducting A Needs Assessment, Jennifer Riedl Cross, Tracy Cross, Andrea D. Frazier

NALS Journal

Providing effective professional development in laboratory schools around topics that can be divisive, such as preparing a school environment for expansion of gifted education services, can be quite difficult. However, doing so based on data collected through a needs assessment can be invaluable to the planning process. As part of a needs assessment in preparation to enroll 100 new gifted students, students and teachers (N=171) from a unique setting in which a residential school for gifted high school students is housed within a laboratory school were surveyed using F. Gagné and L. Nadeau’s (1991) Opinions about the Gifted …

The Prioritization Of And Time Spent On Fundraising Duties By Public Comprehensive University Presidents, Robert L. Jackson May 2013

The Prioritization Of And Time Spent On Fundraising Duties By Public Comprehensive University Presidents, Robert L. Jackson

International Journal of Leadership and Change

This article focuses on the prioritization of and time spent by public comprehensive university presidents on their fundraising duties. This research is a component of a larger, more comprehensive study completed in 2012 entitled, The American Public Comprehensive University: An Exploratory Study of The President’s Role in Fundraising.

This research is timely since public universities, which educate nearly 80% of all college students in America, are going through a period of great change. They are struggling to balance their budgets as states further reduce higher education appropriations. Specifically, state appropriations for public universities are at their lowest point in …

Leadership, A Question Of Power And Vision, Douglas Biklen May 2013

Leadership, A Question Of Power And Vision, Douglas Biklen

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Leadership! Books have been written about it, yet we still seem to want more accounts of it. In large part, the desire for ever more examples and models of leadership derives, I think, from the fact that leadership occurs in context, and particular contexts seem to call for particular kinds of leadership qualities. In this brief paper, I will discuss leadership for school improvement and two core principles that can help explicate it: power and insight.

The Development Of Campus Academic Leaders, Walter H. Gmelch May 2013

The Development Of Campus Academic Leaders, Walter H. Gmelch

International Journal of Leadership and Change

What are universities and colleges doing to provide preparatory leadership experiences for our next generation of academic deans and department chairs? They typically come to the position without leadership training, without prior executive experience, without a clear understanding of the ambiguity and complexity of their roles, without recognition of the metamorphic changes that occur as one transforms from an academic to a leader, and without an awareness of the cost to their academic and personal lives. A radical change to developing academic leaders must be achieved if we are to respond to today’s challenges. The purpose of this research is …

The Role Of Supportive Leaders At Top Performing Universities: Best Practice Lessons From American Institutions For Indonesian Higher Education, Gerardo M. Gonzalez, Margaret Sutton

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Leaders at top performing American universities share the fundamental belief that the faculty is the engine of quality within the university and that supportive leadership can fuel it. Academic administrators who function as supportive leaders help create the interpersonal, institutional, and financial conditions necessary to support high levels of performance by members of the faculty. This paper discusses and illustrates supportive leadership in top performing American universities in order to stimulate dialogue about whether and how supportive leadership can be fostered in Indonesian institutions of higher education.

Examining Relationships Between Urban Principal Change Facilitator Style And Student Learning, Gene E. Hall, Italia A. Negroni, Archie A. George

International Journal of Leadership and Change

The Change Facilitator Style of all 27 elementary school principals and student test scores in one urban school district were examined. Analysis of covariance was employed to identify relationships between principal Change Facilitator Style and fifth grade student scores on the Connecticut Mastery Tests in writing, editing & revising, reading comprehension, and a total score and two sub scores for mathematics (computational and conceptual). Students in Initiator and Manager CF Style schools had significantly higher test scores in comparison with students in schools with Responder CF Style principals. The Digital Women’S Project At Pepperdine University, Graduate School Of Education And Psychology, Kerri Cissna-Heath, Margaret J. Weber

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

In 2009, a research group was formed at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology, to explore the competing narratives of women’s lives as they balance their work activities with the demands of marriage and motherhood. The ultimate goal of this project was to understand the work-life balance issues of women in the workforce. This work is now known as the Digital Women’s Project (Weber, 2011) and has collected over 180 interviews of women to explore themes around work-life balance. This phenomenological analysis utilizes a narrative life-course framework created by Giele (2008) to explore identity, relational style, drive and …

Gender Dynamics At A Christian Liberal Arts College, Edee M. Schulze, Anne Becvar, Patricia Hansen, Dayna Taylor

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Research studies in recent decades have described the limiting effects of a “chilly climate” on women’s opportunities within higher educational settings. Additionally, much has been written about how gender role expectations within evangelical Christianity impact women. This study sought to understand the gender assumptions of faculty and students, to explore the impact these assumptions have on gender dynamics in the classroom, and to reveal the educational experiences and aspirations of female students at a Christian evangelical liberal arts college. Further, this study sought to explore whether female students feel they are thriving or merely surviving their college experience. This research …

Undocumented Students In Christian Higher Education: Theological And Legal Ramifications For Financing Student Leaders, Nathanael P. Austin, Maddie Deegan, Leah N. Fulton, Keartsten Karrick

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Private institutions in the United States of America are being forced to confront an increasing number of undocumented persons who seek employment, education, healthcare, and personal development. In this case study we considered the options which Christian colleges must weigh when interested in allowing undocumented students to serve in (traditionally) paid leadership roles on campus. Through research, interviews with student development professionals, and conversations with formerly undocumented students, this study provides a unique solution for Christian colleges to consider when faced with the consideration of undocumented students in leadership roles. The scope of our research is focused in three primary …
