All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Arabic language is one of the significant world languages; it is the official language of 21 countries. Over three million people speak Arabic as a first language in the United States and almost all of them are native-born Americans (Sehlaoui, 2008). Taha (2007) indicated that 84.5% of international students and American students felt that learning Arabic was an asset because of the linguistic and cultural aspects. Arabic as a second language does not reach the same level of popularity as other world languages (Ryding, 2013). Math Self-Efficacy Effects On Prisoners' Academic Achievement, Randall Peder Bergman Jan 2018

Math Self-Efficacy Effects On Prisoners' Academic Achievement, Randall Peder Bergman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined three hypothesized math-self efficacy (MSE) sources that inhibit adult basic education male prisoner mathematics achievement. Previous correctional studies indicated that United States prisoners tend to have low self-efficacy and therefore lower academic achievement (Greve & Enzmann, 2003). Adult education studies also indicated lower self-efficacy in adults older than age 20 who take coursework to complete their high school diploma (Jameson & Fusco, 2014). Survey studies of MSE factors from analysis showed that students who self-reported lower self-confidence, negative self-beliefs, increased math anxieties, and greater devaluation of math’s usefulness to their future employment have significant barriers to math …

The National History Day program has been utilized in a Southeastern Minnesota school on and off since Minnesota began participating in the program in the 1980s. This secondary data analysis sought to determine the impact that embedding National History Day programming would have on the achievement of students on two standardized tests, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment III and the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress. Existing research identified that National History Day curriculum was a disciplinary literacy strategy that would transfer skills to other subjects including reading and math when compared to scores from students that did not participate. …

The Effect Of Unfunded Tuition Discount On The Financial Health Of Very Small Colleges, Andrea L. Ide Jan 2018

The Effect Of Unfunded Tuition Discount On The Financial Health Of Very Small Colleges, Andrea L. Ide

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very small colleges, under 750 students, are valuable and yet vulnerable institutions in American higher education. Without financial stability, very small colleges are more susceptible to failure in the face of economic challenges. Very small colleges adopt many of the same financial strategies used by larger colleges without consideration that the size of the college may require different strategies. This study considered the relationship between the unfunded tuition discount rate and the financial health of private, non-profit, four-year, baccalaureate colleges. Enrollment, institutional debt and institutional wealth were then used as moderators in a moderation regression analysis to determine the effect …

This qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ professional and personal perceptions of the VAM to determine teachers’ performance, compensation, and personnel consequences. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with 12 teachers employed at a single Florida school district. Participants held a negative view on the use of VAM for teacher evaluations and merit pay determination. A …
