Fifty years ago, Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow (1973) stated that Tawaw Education (pseudonym) has been failing to meet the academic needs of First Nations students from K-12. This ongoing issue is highlighted by both the Office of the Auditor General’s Reports (2009; 2019) and Yee’s (2021) Review of Inclusive and Special Education Report. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) addresses the ongoing education issues First Nations people have endured for many years and provides guidance to support improved educator efficacy throughout the system. This qualitative case study examined early adolescent students’ perceptions of their service-learning program experiences at one Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA). The purpose of the study was: (a) to understand how the powerful tradition of the Church related to doing works of social justice and outreach was experienced by students in one ADLA Catholic elementary school in the form of experiential service learning, and (b) to explore whether associations exist between the students’ perceptions of their Catholic identities and their service-learning experiences. Due to their multiple identities, Black women navigate gendered and racialized pathways to leadership in the US education industry. The journey for Black women in and en route to positions of academic leadership is even more nuanced and multiplicative. Little, though, is known about the effects of their intersecting identities and the structural barriers they encounter in this sphere.
