Effects Of A Classroom Cognitive Apprenticeship On Scientific Reasoning, Student Agency, And Biology Self-Efficacy On Students In High School Biology, Anne Morris Byford Aug 2024

Effects Of A Classroom Cognitive Apprenticeship On Scientific Reasoning, Student Agency, And Biology Self-Efficacy On Students In High School Biology, Anne Morris Byford

Theses and Dissertations

Students entering high school often bring misconceptions about the nature of science and experimentation with them from middle school. Many also bring a belief that they are not a “science kid” and, therefore, cannot be a strong student in Biology. This belief can lead to a lack of self-efficacy and of student agency in the classroom. Exposure to authentic research experiences has been shown to increase in self-efficacy and scientific reasoning. Typical research experiences have been limited to summers, specialized after school programs and, in many cases, honors students. To circumvent the unequitable access to these experiences and to determine …

Rural, K-12 East Tennessee School Principals’ Perceptions Of Principal Preparation Programs And Ongoing Professional Development Opportunities, Whitney Butler Jun 2024

Rural, K-12 East Tennessee School Principals’ Perceptions Of Principal Preparation Programs And Ongoing Professional Development Opportunities, Whitney Butler

Ed.D. Dissertations

There were concerns in both quantity and quality of principal candidates regarding training experiences and principals being prepared to lead schools. Research was limited when it came to principal preparation programs (PPPs) training rural, East Tennessee school principals to become instructional leaders and school district leaders providing ongoing professional development opportunities for rural principals. Due to the overall lack of research regarding these facets, further research was necessary to understand how PPPs advisors and school district leaders needed to better prepare rural school principals to lead instructionally. Twenty rural school principals responded to a questionnaire regarding principals’ perceptions of PPPs …

Campus Ministry And Spiritual Self-Efficacy: A Phenomenological Study Of Academic Achievement Among Black Male Students At An Historically Black College And University, Mitchell Stevens

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, which emphasizes the importance of self-efficacy in motivation and achievement (Bandura, 1994), provided a lens through which to analyze the influence of Historically Black Colleges and University’s (HBCUs) campus ministry on the development of spiritual self-efficacy and academic achievement among Black males. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have a long history of providing higher education opportunities to Black students, and they have been instrumental in fostering academic, personal, and social growth (Smith & Allen, 2014). However, little is known about the specific impact of campus ministry programs on the development of Black males’ spiritual self-efficacy and …

Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Cyberbullying: A Qualitative Investigation Of Teacher Perspectives, Shanda Salvant Theriot May 2024

Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Cyberbullying: A Qualitative Investigation Of Teacher Perspectives, Shanda Salvant Theriot

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

This qualitative study explored the self-efficacy of middle school teachers as they address cyberbullying in the classroom. A phenomenological research design using a purposive sampling method was used. To understand the teachers’ lived experiences and perspectives on cyberbullying, open-ended semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventh-grade teachers from two parochial schools and three charter schools. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire, which was used to gather additional information regarding the teachers’ background and experience. Seven themes emerged from coding the data collected from the teacher interviews and focus group session: 1) collaboration and communication, 2) professional development and training, 3) support and …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Principals’ Leadership Attributes In A Lower Rio Grande Valley (Rgv) School District And The Influence On Their Leaders’ Attributes To Their Self-Efficacy, Arely Rios Tamez May 2024

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Principals’ Leadership Attributes In A Lower Rio Grande Valley (Rgv) School District And The Influence On Their Leaders’ Attributes To Their Self-Efficacy, Arely Rios Tamez

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study is to obtain middle school teachers’ perceptions of their principals’ leadership attributes and analyze how their perceptions of those leadership attributes relate to their sense of self-efficacy. Teacher participants from five middle schools in a lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV) school district in South Texas will be asked to complete two surveys: one survey based on their perceptions of their principals’ leadership attributes (TPPAQ) and another survey measuring teacher efficacy (TEBS-Self). Data analysis using multiple regression will examine if there is a relationship between teacher perceived school leadership attributes of their principals and …

Professional Development For Culturally Responsive Teaching: Examining The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Implementation In Teaching Practice, Chrystal Mckeever May 2024

Professional Development For Culturally Responsive Teaching: Examining The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Implementation In Teaching Practice, Chrystal Mckeever

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study sought to investigate the link between professional development and the implementation of professional learning to improve student performance. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, this study explored whether the professional development of culturally responsive teaching influenced classroom implementation. Second, this study examined the relationships between teachers’ implementation of culturally responsive strategies, teacher self-efficacy, and student performance. This approach (which contextualized academic knowledge and skills within a real-world setting) has been shown to lead to more meaningful experiences and increased interest in academic content (Gay, 2010; Ladson-Billings, 1995). The overarching questions that led this …

Educating The Whole Child: The Transformative Power Of Self-Efficacy, Hannah Wallenta

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined research on the teaching strategies that impact self-efficacy and student achievement. This research goes beyond what structures are needed for student success and delves into the methods used to support the whole child from a psychological perspective that prepares them for success outside of the classroom. Further research is needed to …

Transformational Leadership Behaviors Of Department Leaders As A Predictor Of Collective Teacher Efficacy, Jason Stanton Jan 2024

Transformational Leadership Behaviors Of Department Leaders As A Predictor Of Collective Teacher Efficacy, Jason Stanton

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Researchers generally credit Albert Bandura for providing the theoretical framework for studying collective teacher efficacy. Research shows that principals using transformational leadership behaviors significantly impact collective teacher efficacy. Policies, such as Every Student Succeeds Act, increasingly put pressure on school districts to improve student achievement or lose funding. Supporting literature and research shows that improving collective teacher efficacy improves student performance regardless of student socioeconomic status. Therefore, a department leader’s ability to increase collective teacher efficacy amongst staff directly influences the student achievement within their school district. This researcher investigated the relationship between transformational leader behaviors of department leaders and …

Student Barriers And Motivators To Bystander Intervention If Witnessing Potential Sexual Violence On College Campuses, Jaquenette G. Lochrie Jan 2024

Student Barriers And Motivators To Bystander Intervention If Witnessing Potential Sexual Violence On College Campuses, Jaquenette G. Lochrie

Theses and Dissertations

Bystander intervention has received increased attention as a potential sexual violence prevention strategy, primarily to address campus sexual assault (McMahon et al., 2017). Shifting the focus from potential victims and perpetrators, the bystander approach engages all members of a campus community to act by increasing positive attitudes and behaviors related to sexual violence and greater willingness to intervene in pro-social ways. This study examined associations between college students’ bystander intervention behavior and three key factors: (a) perceived self-efficacy, (b) a sense of responsibility to act, and (c) the relationship between the student bystander and the victim or perpetrator. The researcher …
