Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As the rise in need for social emotional learning (SEL) becomes apparent in schools, the lack consistent implementation in schools is apparent. Information has been collected stating how districts, schools, and teachers implement their own SEL lessons into the classroom to promote student well-being. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of administrators and teachers in urban elementary schools in a Maryland school district regarding possible barriers to consistent implementation of high-quality SEL. The theoretical framework for this study is based on CASEL’s SEL framework. The research questions focus on the perception of implementation and barriers …

K-12 Teachers' Perceptions Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Ontario, Canada, Heather Banks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) is an approach to teaching that emphasizes students’ cultural backgrounds in classroom learning to improve student success, cultural competence, and critical consciousness in culturally diverse learners. Research highlights that using CRP in multicultural classrooms supports the engagement, learning, and achievement of culturally diverse students around the world, but less is known about how K-12 teachers’ perceptions of CRP impact the usage of this practice in their classrooms. This basic qualitative study examined K-12 teachers’ perceptions of CRP in Ontario, Canada, to address this gap in practice and determine why educators are not widely using CRP in …

Principal Literacy Leadership Perspectives And Practices, Megan Patricia Shay

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Current elementary data from a large suburban district in the eastern part of the United States demonstrate that less than half of students in Grades 3 through 5 are demonstrating sufficient literacy achievement as measured by state assessments. This problem is of great concern since strong literacy achievement is fundamental to student success in school and preparation for college and career. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of elementary principals from this district on their role and practices as leaders in their students’ literacy achievement. The conceptual framework for this study is Murphy’s model …

Teacher Educator And School Administrator Perceptions Of Teacher Preparedness To Implement Culturally Responsive Practice, Gail Olivia Hudson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The number of students from ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse backgrounds in K–12 public education settings has increased in the past two decades. However, 80% of teachers in public schools are White and middle-class, which does not mirror the student population. Even though higher education prepares teachers to be culturally sensitive to diverse cultures, more understanding is needed. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory single-embedded case study was to explore teacher educators’ and elementary (K–5) building administrators’ perceptions of preservice and early-career teachers’ preparedness from a university to implement culturally responsive practices for ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students in …

Administrators’ Challenges To Provide Sustainable Instruction To Children Of Military Personnel, Pamela Yvette Tucker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Military-connected students (MCSs) face academic challenges because of frequent transitions. During military parents' permanent change in duty station (PCS), MCSs are absent for 15 days or more. PCS-related absenteeism has increased over the last decade, and academic achievement has decreased. This basic qualitative capstone project study examined the challenges of high school administrators from Southeast Asian Pacific Island district schools to provide teachers with systematic professional development that supports sustainable instruction for MCSs during PCS-related absences. The conceptual framework for the study was Hersey and Blanchard's situational leadership theory (SLT). SLT suggests that administrators adopt leadership approaches to combat PCS-related …

Elementary Teacher Perspectives Regarding Leadership Practices That Supported Creation Of A Dual Language Public School, Angelica Ozuna

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

An increase in the enrollment of elementary school students who do not speak English as their first language has led to initiatives to provide effective instruction for these students which require effective leadership. The problem is that leadership practices have been unsuccessful in supporting dual language elementary school teachers, and minimal research has explored teachers’ perspectives of leadership in this area. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore perspectives of rural public school teachers regarding leadership practices they found effective and ineffective in creation of a new dual language elementary school. Eleven participants answered 10 semistructured interview …

Middle And High School Administrators’ Perceptions On The Use Of Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices Related To Student Discipline, Amanda Mccullough

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educators in the United States have become increasingly concerned about students who are suspended out of school because they miss classroom instruction and are then less likely to graduate. The problem addressed in this study was that school administrators continued to use exclusionary practices for discipline negating more culturally responsive practices. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore middle and high school administrators’ perceptions on their approaches to discipline and culturally responsive practices when considering disciplinary consequences as an alternative to out of school suspension. Culturally responsive school leadership served as the conceptual frameworks for this study. …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Excessive workplace stress and burnout have been persistent issues for teachers in the public school setting. The problem addressed in this project study was that K–12 school principals are inconsistently implementing leadership practices (LPs) to support teachers who experience burnout in two public school districts under study. Guided by the instructional leadership theory of Hallinger and Murphy, the purpose of this project study was to examine the perceptions of K–12 school principals regarding their implementation of LPs to support teachers who experience burnout. In this basic qualitative research design 10 K–12 principals from a local school district were purposefully selected …
