The Effective Practices Of Tasa Honor School Boards In Texas: A View Through The Lens Of Scott's Three Pillars Of Institutional Theory, Kendra Leigh Nelson

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Quality public schools are linked to the effectiveness of their school boards, and voting for local trustees, elected lay men and women, impacts the overall condition of local communities (Foster, 2014). Experts believe school board adeptness and efficiency can be increased by improving procedures (Sell, 2005). Looking through the lens of institutional theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of Richard Scott’s three pillars of institutionalization (regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive forces) through exploring specific procedures of TASA Honor Boards as compared to demographically similar boards. This study relied on content analysis of school board meeting minutes …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Supervision And Job Satisfaction Factors Among Residence Directors And Resident Assistants, Stephen A. Berg

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Supervising Resident Assistants (RAs) on college campuses is one of the most critical roles of housing staff members. Supervision is a critical skill for student affairs professionals to possess yet there remains little research on the supervision of RAs. In this study, the relationship between perceived levels of synergistic supervision, training, and job satisfaction factors was examined among residence directors (RDs) and RAs. The researcher sought to fill this gap the in the …

Understanding The Perceptions Of Mattering, Feelings Of Burnout, And Job Satisfaction Of Resident Assistants At Four-Year Midwestern Universities, James C. Stoner

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Since first conceptualized in the 1970s, employee burnout has received much scholarly attention in various service-oriented fields. While some disciplines have benefited from an abundance of burnout research (e.g., nursing, education), other specific jobs have received limited attention. One such position is the Resident Assistant (RA) job on college campuses. RAs serve a critical, service-oriented role in higher education and have a wide range of difficult job responsibilities. As such, RAs are not immune to burnout. The limited existing research on RA burnout has failed to address the foundational cause of burnout; that is, the relationships between RAs who provide …

An Exploratory Study On The Manifestations Of New Public Management (Npm) In Teacher Education, Ricardo Garcia May 2016

An Exploratory Study On The Manifestations Of New Public Management (Npm) In Teacher Education, Ricardo Garcia

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Scholars have written extensively on the impact of neoliberal ideology on global economies and society, in general. Included in these studies has been the impact of neoliberalism on public education in the US and the spawning of a neoliberal-based form of organizational management known as new public management (NPM). Beginning in the 1980s, literature on NPM began to emerge as scholars reported findings associated with the management system’s pervasive principles in public organizations, including institutions of higher education. Absent from this scholarship, however, are the effects of NPM on traditional four-year university teacher preparation programs. Perhaps even more unexplored are …

Analysis Of An Alternative High School's Graduates And Dropouts: A Phenomenological Study, Marina E. Flores

Some joined the workforce or dropped out of school altogether. Other students enrolled in an alternative high school during the prescribed four years and either graduated on time, graduated in their fifth year, or dropped out. In this phenomenological study, deciding factors for school disengagement and reengagement were explored, via self-determination theory, by examining how …

Teachers' Perspectives On The Efficacy Of Inclusion For The General Education Student, Valayne May May 2016

Teachers' Perspectives On The Efficacy Of Inclusion For The General Education Student, Valayne May

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Laws require special education students to be educated in the least restricted environment, which often means placing special education students with their general education peers in inclusion classroom settings. Inclusion classroom research has focused mainly on the efficacy for special education students, ignoring the effects of inclusion on the general education students, who make up the majority of students in K-12 education. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of four content and three special education teachers who teach in inclusion classrooms in a successful middle school in Texas regarding the efficacy of inclusion for …

Teaching Creative Writing In The Age Of Common Core, Casey Unverferth

Honors Projects

The core of my honors project includes a 12-day unit plan for teaching creative writing in the form of narratives. I created lessons for 12 days, created the materials needed for each day, and created a website where my work has been displayed for my future classroom. The website link is: teachcreatewrite.weebly.com. All materials for the unit plan are broken down by day, and I chose to expand upon 3 days in a short lesson plan template.
