This project examined preventative and responsive safety plans that improved the educational climate of schools through the successful elimination of negative physical, mental and emotional threats to students and employees. The review of current research found that schools were more successful in reducing or eliminating safety threats when a comprehensive school safety program was collaboratively developed and implemented Furthermore, a comprehensive school safety plan that was made easily accessible to every member of the staff and that was assessed continuously also played a vital role to the success of the school safety plan. This project examined preventative and proactive behavior interventions and strategies that maximized learning and minimized inappropriate behavior. The review of current research found that schools were more successful in reducing or eliminating violent behavior when a positive school wide behavior program was collaboratively developed, implemented, and frequently monitored over time. Included is a K- 5 Behavior Intervention Guide that focused on preintervention support for students using various forms of positive recognition, written expectations, and proactive behavior interventions that reinforce appropriate behavior. Reading Matters : A Case Study Of A Community Volunteer Tutoring Program, Leslie Clayberger Haynes

The objective of this qualitative research was to study through a phenomenological approach Reading Matters, a community volunteer reading program to determine if students are demonstrating improvement, to uncover the characteristics of the program and the tutoring techniques used by volunteers, and to create a potential model by which administrators can design volunteer tutoring programs for other schools. One coordinator, one principal, eight classroom teachers, three volunteers, and five students participated in the study.
