The Essential Process In A Family Of Measurement Models, Geoff Masters, Benjamin Wright Nov 1984

The Essential Process In A Family Of Measurement Models, Geoff Masters, Benjamin Wright

Prof Geoff Masters AO

Five members of the Rasch family of latent trait models which have appeared more or less independently in the literature are brought together and identified as one model. In addition to sharing the distinguishing characteristic of the dichotomous Rasch model separable person and item parameters and hence sufficient statistics all five models share a common algebraic form and have as their basic element the fundamental process defined by Rasch's simple logistic expression. In these models, the sufficient statistics for person and item parameters are counts of events constructed to be indicative of the variable being measured, and the measures they …

What Have We Learned From Process Models Of Conversion? An Examination Of Ten Case Studies, David Rudy Oct 1984

What Have We Learned From Process Models Of Conversion? An Examination Of Ten Case Studies, David Rudy

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Many attempts to understand the conversion process have been guided by Lofland and Stark's (1965) "process-mode." We examine ten case studies of the conversion process in diverse groups in order to specify the conditions under which the Lofland-Stark model applies. Several components of the model are rejected for conceptual reasons. Other components are to be found in some types of groups but not in others. Only "formation of affective bonds with group members" and "intensive interaction with group members" seem to be indispensable prerequisites for conversion. Thus, any group which is to successfully convert people must be structured so as …

The Costs Of Recurrent Education, Phil Mckenzie Apr 1984

The Costs Of Recurrent Education, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This paper addresses the subject of the likely costs of a particular form of recurrent education in the context of prospective movements in expenditure on conventional school and tertiary education activities. Data on projected enrolments and likely per student expenditure levels in these sectors lead to the conclusion that expenditure on school and tertiary education is likely to decline as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade. The magnitude of this prospective decline is compared with the likely costs of a scheme which would enable significant numbers of workforce members to engage in recurrent periods of …

Research To Develop A Consensus Self-Evaluation Model Of National Norms Of Excellence For Alternating Cooperative Education Programs At Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Constance F. Brothers

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The research described in this dissertation was conducted in response to an expressed need for the development of national norms of excellence for cooperative education programs in the United States in 1980. In academic year 1981-1982 a Delphi technique was used with 12 cooperative education experts, who identified 155 cooperative education program norms of excellence specifically for four-year alternating cooperative education programs.

In academic year 1982-1983, the 155 norms identified were transposed into a 90-item self-evaluation questionnaire which was field tested and sampled at 14 colleges and universities with alternating cooperative education programs in the United States. Of 900 college …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Tests are constructed and used to facilitate assessment and understanding of human beings in all their multifaceted complexity. Hence, testing by its very nature is both a scientific and a social endeavor.

The interplay between testing and society has resulted in both praise and criticism from concerned citizens, psychologists, educators, and numerous other professional and consumer groups. For over 40 years, Oscar K. Buros, as Director of The Institute of Mental Measurements and Editor of the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. contributed immensely to this interplay between testing practices and societal issues. On March 19, 1978, Oscar Buros died. Luella Buros …
