Academic advising is associated with increased student retention and academic success. A Phenomenological Study Of Students’ Advising Experiences In A Four-Year Centralized Advising Center, Nicole Rowan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore how undergraduate students experienced and understood academic advising within the context of a four-year centralized, primary role advising center at a public research university in the mid-south. This qualitative study included 13 undergraduate juniors or seniors from the liberal arts college of a large research university. Using phenomenological methods, I explored the lived experience of these students’ advising experiences through a series of focus groups and one-on-one interviews with the goal of understanding how academic advising impacted the students’ sense of connectedness to the university. Five themes emerged from these interviews: access …

Perceptions Of Academic Advising And Student Retention, Stacy Renaee Soden

Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to examine student and academic advisors’ perceptions of advisement techniques to determine the connection between academic advising strategies and student retention. If student retention rates are not addressed, higher education institutions are at risk of losing students, which is costly to the institution and the student (Himes, 2014). Most college students are in a state of change and need academic advice to achieve success during a college transition (Tinto, 2012). Academic advisors can assist students in finding the right career for students’ specific strengths. This qualitative study utilized Tinto’s (2012) theories of student …

The Work Life Of The Professional Academic Advisor: A Qualitative Study., Susan Bramlett Epps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Professional advisors are bearing the burdens of a) helping students make a connection to their institution; b) being largely responsible for the efforts to retain these students; and c) providing a multitude of services to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body. While a great deal of information is available about students, retention, and services, the literature is void of detailed information on the professional advisor and the advisor's work life. The purpose of this study was to learn more about how advisors experience the elements of work life (job satisfaction, relationships with colleagues, commitment to the organization, …

The program was designed as a three-year pilot program beginning in the 2000-2001 school year and fully implemented by 2002-2003. At that time it will become a graduation requirement. The program involved career pathways, portfolios, and exit interviews. The results showed that the program followed state and district standards and requirements. It also …

The Organization Of A Guidance Program With Emphasis On Human Relations And Inclusion Of Human Relations Classes, Marian Wells Irwin

Graduate Student Research Papers

Guidance is the key to successful education. For maximum learning, growth, and development, the "spirit" of guidance must permeate the school board, the administration, and every aspect of the educational program. The subject of this research paper was selected for three reasons. First was the sense of responsibility toward children. It is the writer's firm conviction that without genuine Human Relations atmosphere some child is being deprived of his opportunity for complete development. Second was the earnest hope that this plan may, through the adoption of Human-Relations' principles, contribute toward the improvement of conditions in a specific school district. Third …
