Mapping Educational Research And Its Impact On Australian Schools, John Ainley, Allyson Holbrook, Sid Bourke, John Owen, Phil Mckenzie, Sebastian Misson, Trevor Johnson
Dr John Ainley
This report provides an analysis of educational research and its impact on Australian schools. It has a particular focus on research done by academic staff and postgraduate students in university faculties of education, since around 90 percent of the resources involved in Australian educational research are located in those faculties. Within the total research endeavour the report concentrates on research concerned with Australian schools and schooling. The report developed an analytical framework drawn from the literature concerned with knowledge utilisation. The report has provided the most comprehensive mapping yet undertaken of the educational research that was underway in Australia in …

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie
Dr John Ainley
In a number of countries the past 20 years have seen increases decentralisation of authority for a range of decisions to individual schools. A range of arguments has been advanced in support of decentralisation but a common belief is that shifting authority to schools will enhance the quality, effectiveness and responsiveness of public education. This paper argues decentralisation is not a unitary concept and can be applied to different elements of the teaching and learning environment: curriculum organisation, financial management, personnel management and resource allocation. Research that has investigated the impact of decentralisation itself on student learning outcomes has not …

The joint Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers AAMT/Monash University project 'Excellence in the teaching of mathematics: professional standards project' has been working with teacher focus groups in four states to try and build a picture of what mathematics teachers believe represents excellent teaching. This paper discusses the second aim of this project: to develop an assessment scheme and protocols for certifying this excellence. Topics discussed are developing ways to assess excellence, looking at an American model of assessment - the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and other models for standards of excellence in teaching.

At the beginning of 2000 the principal and staff of St Catherine's, Moorabbin, Victoria, instituted an additional assistance mathematics program within their school to support those children identified as being at risk in the early years. Children in Grade 1 and Grade 2 were the focus for withdrawal and support and were offered three sessions a week withdrawal and some whole class skills activity sessions for the year. Classroom needs was the focus for Grade 3 and children who were specifically targeted in relation to place value and the laws of mathematics received one session per week withdrawal for two …

This paper discusses group learning among VCE mathematics students at a combined schools' workshop in Hamilton, Victoria, and at Gippsland Grammar. When tasks with the potential for collaborative groups to discover complexities are used in conjunction with a teaching approach like class collaboration students tend to engage with the tasks, more frequently display the types of characteristics possessed by talented mathematicians, and develop new mathematical understandings. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the tks described in this paper are suitable for such a purpose.

The advent of the Internet and the use of the World Wide Web (www) have changed the ways people and organizations disseminate information, broadened the means by which industries worldwide deliver services and, in so doing, shortened the distance between members of the global community. These developments have also provided implications and opportunities for the establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial online alliances worldwide. EdNA Online - an online manifestation of the networked education community in Australia (hence the acronym EdNA for Education Network Australia) - plans to be in a position to capitalise on these national and international strategic …

Mapping Educational Research And Exploring Research Impact: A Holistic, Multi-Method Approach, Allyson Holbrook, Sid Bourke, John Owen, Phil Mckenzie, John Ainley

This paper discusses the main analytical techniques used in "Mapping Educational Research and Its Impact on Schools." The study considered the impact of the outcomes of educational research on the practice of teaching and learning in Australian schools and on educational policy and administration. Mixed methods were used, beginning with a review of the literature and the exploration of the Australian Education Index (AEI) educational research database. Documents were collected from faculties of education in Australia, and questionnaires about the use of educational literature were developed for postgraduate students (n=1,267), school principals (n=73), and representatives of 72 professional associations. Interviews …

Using Longitudinal Data For Research On Vet, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
Longitudinal studies can provide insights on young people's transition from education to work that other forms of data cannot. The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program, which is managed jointly by the Australian Council for Educational Research and the Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA), has now accumulated more than 20 years of data that follow successive cohorts of young Australians as they move through education and training and into the labour market. The data are added to every year. This paper explores the potential of LSAY data for research on VET, and also some of …

Measurement Of The Socio-Economic Status Of Australian Higher Education Students, Julie Mcmillan, John Western
Measurement Of The Socio-Economic Status Of Australian Higher Education Students, Julie Mcmillan, John Western
Julie McMillan
The underrepresentation of persons from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education in countries such as Australia is of policy concern. In order to be able to identify such individuals for targeted interventions and to monitor their participation rates, it is necessary to have an accurate, simple to administer, and relatively inexpensive method of measuring students' socio-economic characteristics. We demonstrate that the postcode methodology currently used by the Australian Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) for monitoring purposes, while being relatively simple and inexpensive to administer, is subject to considerable error. A student is allocated the `average' socio-economic status …

The Anu3_2 Scale: A Revised Occupational Status Scale For Australia, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan
The Anu3_2 Scale: A Revised Occupational Status Scale For Australia, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan
Julie McMillan
Australian researchers have used ANU status scales for over two decades to assign socioeconomic status scores to occupations coded into the occupational classifications produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). When the ABS has released new occupational classifications in the past, the ANU scale has been updated accordingly. The most recent status scale, the ANU3 scale, was developed in 1989 for use with the First Edition of the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO). In 1996, however, the ABS released the Second Edition of ASCO. In this paper, we report an adaptation of the ANU3 scale for use with …

The Implications Of Halo Effects And Item Dependencies For Objective Measurement, T Mcnamara, Ray Adams
The Implications Of Halo Effects And Item Dependencies For Objective Measurement, T Mcnamara, Ray Adams
Prof Ray Adams
Analysis of data from performance-based language tests presents the problem of dealing appropriately with bundles of items that are linked to particular tasks. The authors use recent developments in Rasch modelling which allow analysis of bundles of items (or sets of ratings) to examine the extent of dependence between items and ratings, and they explore the implications of those dependences on the assessments. Data from two performance assessments are used in two studies of this problem.
