Interprofessional education is considered the first step to providing students with the knowledge and skill required to participate in interprofessional collaboration. The lingering question in research is if students can take these skills from the classroom to clinical practice. The answer to this question will help guide educators when developing effective IPE training. This quantitative, correlational study aimed to explore if healthcare students that participated in a two-part, case-based interprofessional educational session were able to transfer that skill to their clinical experience. The health care system has undergone transformation, implementing an interprofessional approach to patient care. Professionals have formed collaborative practice groups that effectively respond to the intricacies of today’s medical industry. Dental hygienists are underemployed in these teams. This has a direct effect on dental hygiene academia because education is the basis for practice. Interprofessional education (IPE) has been proposed as the strategy to adequately address this issue; however, many dental hygiene programs do not focus on shared teaching and learning.
