A handbook for implementing "Student Team Learning" as an alternative teaching strategy for middle level math teachers was developed after conducting extensive action research project within a sixth grade math classroom. A literature review on barriers to learning mathematics in middle schools and Student Team Learning as a teaching strategy was conducted. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine characteristics of academically successful Hispanic students. Rather than ask ourselves why so many Hispanic students are failing, this study takes a more positive approach to this subject. Despite repeated failures and early academic difficulties, some Hispanic students continue to fight through the adversity. Some children have a positive attitude toward school although there are monumental barriers for these at-risk children. The home factors oflow-SES primary students, having high academic achievement were investigated. Six second grade students were identified as qualifying for free and reduced lunch, while also having high academic achievement. Their primary caretakers were interviewed in order to investigate the factors within their homes that aid academic achievement. The results of this study showed that none of these high achieving second grade students had home factors that were typical for low-SES home environments. On July 31, 1979, the Yakima School Board of School District 7, Yakima, Washington, approved a graduation policy change increasing the total number of credits required from forty-eight to sixty-six. This change required that eighteen credits be transferred from grade nine of the junior high school setting. This study attempts to assess the impact of the change upon the performance and attitudes of ninth grade students. Indications are that students accepted the changes positively, felt they were working harder, and, in two schools showed a decrease in the failure rate. A Comparison Of Children’S Achievement Whose Mothers Are Employed Full Time And Those Whose Mothers Are Homemakers, Thomas R. Funk

This study undertook to examine the relationship between mothers' employment status and the children's achievement. 728 third grade students in the Bellingham Public Schools were used as subjects. The data was analyzed by two way analysis of variance and multiple correlation procedures. There was no relationship found between the mothers' employment ststus and the children's achievement. However, there was a relationship between fathers' occupational level, family size, children's intelligence, and children's sex and some of the achievement tests.
