In response to the growing need to perform assessments online, we have developed a secure answer book, as well as a tool for automatically grading it for our course on spread- sheet modeling. We applied these techniques to a cohort of about 160 students who took the course last term. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation and the techniques employed to enhance both the security of the answer book and the ease, accuracy and consistency of grading. In this paper we report our study on the design and implementation of a visual analytics tool, Competency Analytics System (CAS), which provides feedback to instructors on both the cohort and individual student’s competency acquisition rate, as well as provide personalized dashboard to each student on his or her competency acquisition for a specific course. We present the key functionalities of CAS and describe a case study on the implementation of CAS in a first-year programming course. The controversial bell curve has received considerable attention in recent years as a grade distribution tool where “norm-referenced grading involves comparing students’ performances with each other” rather than where they fall on a “predefined continuum of quality” (Brookhart, 2013, p. 258). Despite educators’ deep concern on the fairness of bell curve grading, there is little research done on students’ conceptions of that grading system in higher education. This correlational study uses open-ended questions and three instruments to measure students’ conceptions of the fairness of bell curve grading, their goal orientations, and motivation. The study examines the effectiveness of active learning in Management Accounting (MA) in Singapore Management University (SMU). The aims of the paper are to determine student learning styles through the Felder and Soloman’s Index of Learning Styles (ILS) instrument, if there is correlation with demographics and whether activities found effective matched learning preferences. Findings from the ILS instrument established a slight preference for Sensing and Visual learning styles. Findings from the second questionnaire concluded that the active learning curriculum comprising diverse activities succeeded in supporting formative learning.
