Dissertations
Social justice has taken on a special importance in education today, although it is not a new concept in terms of human history. Social justice is not a local issue, but exists in all parts of the world (Jean Marie et al., 2014). Differentiation among social environments of schools and increasing elements of diversity and roles of schools to create a socially just structure can be seen as main reasons for these issues (Turhan, 2010). National ideals stand in tension with local and state developments, as new threats are visible in historical, legal, and technological context. Examples include doctrinal shifts, legislative bills, electronic surveillance and recent attempts to censor books, classroom texts, and reading lists.
Privacy rights for minors in Florida are increasingly unstable. New assertions of parental rights are part of a larger conservative animus. Proponents of IF can identify a lessening of ideals and standards that began after doctrinal fruition in the 1960s …

Special Education Disproportionality Through A Social Lens: A Mixed Methods Approach, Marianne J. Fidishin
Special Education Disproportionality Through A Social Lens: A Mixed Methods Approach, Marianne J. Fidishin
Dissertations
The disproportionate nature of special education, notably with African American students, is longstanding and most pronounced in judgmental eligibility categories such as intellectual disability and emotional disturbance. Numerous studies on disproportionality conclude there is not a single causative factor, but point to the multifactorial nature of the issue and the complex interplay among different factors. Research related to the role social factors exhibited in an institution have on special education referral and eligibility determination is more limited. This is important since practices employed during the eligibility process take place within the institution’s social environment and are underpinned by the beliefs …

There are some inadequacies in our American way of life. One of these is the inadequate help and attention given to the problem of children who become shackled with their lower class environment with little or no desire or incentive to rise above this. The major challenge to any teacher is the ability to stimulate and inspire children to achieve or succeed. There are different degrees of achievement. For one child, great achievement is not the same as for another. The realization of this prompted the decision to see what differences in achievement exist among the three main socio-economic classes. …
