The Student Experience: The Effects Of Three College Retention Strategies On First-Generation Student Success Outcomes, Erica Woods-Warrior
The Student Experience: The Effects Of Three College Retention Strategies On First-Generation Student Success Outcomes, Erica Woods-Warrior
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite the growing importance of post-secondary degree attainment, existing research indicates that first-generation students (FGS) at 4-year colleges and universities are twice as likely as their peers to drop-out of school before their second year of study, and a great proportion of these students never return to complete their undergraduate degree. The present study collected and analyzed institutional data to determine the impact of three programmatic strategies on student retention and academic outcomes for FGS. The strategies are: lower/upper-level student integration, faculty mentorship, peer mentorship, and Communities of Learning (CoL). Each was investigated in the context of a student retention …
Evaluation Of A Conceptual Model Of Student Retention At A Public Urban Commuter University, Hoa Khuong
Evaluation Of A Conceptual Model Of Student Retention At A Public Urban Commuter University, Hoa Khuong
Dissertations
A new conceptual model of student retention was developed and evaluated for first-year retention and for second-year retention of students at an urban, mid-western commuter university. The model captured the joint effects of academic engagement and environmental factors on academic performance and persistence of commuter students in their first two years of college attendance. The academic engagement and environmental factors incorporated into the model included: pre-college academic achievement, Deep Learning, Study Time per Week, College Math Readiness, Major Selection, Hours of Employment, receiving (or not receiving) a Pell Grant Award and Financial Concerns. Structural equation modeling techniques were utilized to …
The Graduate Retention Relationship Cycle : The Role Of Performance, Engagement, Satisfaction, And Alienation, Paula Cornell Lichiello
The Graduate Retention Relationship Cycle : The Role Of Performance, Engagement, Satisfaction, And Alienation, Paula Cornell Lichiello
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This study identified factors related to engagement, satisfaction, and retention outcomes for graduate students in MBA and M.Ed. programs at one private Virginia college who matriculated in the early 21st century. Undergraduate alumni presented unanticipated results as they were less satisfied with their graduate experience than non-alumni at this college. In addition, females were more engaged and more willing to return than males in this research study. The customer-driven business model approach is important to graduate students, as relationships assist in solidifying the bonds with students in higher education institutions, and the strength of those relationships ultimately determines whether students …
Grade Retention Rates: Impact Of Standards-Based Grading As Compared To A Traditional Grading System In 3rd And 5th Grades, Mishea Dean
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Student retention is a contentious issue that has spawned considerable debate among school leaders and policymakers. NCLB's accountability requirement has led to the development of a standards-based grading system to ensure students master content and so schools can meet AYP goals. This causal comparative study examined whether a change from a traditional grading system to a standards-based system affected the student retention frequency rate. Convenience sampling was used to collect retention data on third and fifth grade students who attended four Title 1 schools in northeast Georgia during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years when the grading system changed. A …
An Investigation Of The Differences Between Continuing And Non-Continuing Undergraduate Special Admission Students Related To Academic Advising Factors, Kevin P. Reeves
An Investigation Of The Differences Between Continuing And Non-Continuing Undergraduate Special Admission Students Related To Academic Advising Factors, Kevin P. Reeves
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined some differences between continuing and non-continuing special admission students in areas of academic advising in ways that are more systematic and thorough than past research. The premise of the study is that having a clearer understanding of how academic advising affects retention might provide colleges and universities with information to optimize the collegiate experience for special admission students. Therefore, research on the effect academic advising has on special admission student retention might offer insight into how the interactions between student and advisor affect retention issues.
A non-experimental descriptive research design was employed to investigate the differences between …
