This quantitative study aimed to expand upon existing research, which discussed student expectations, the relationship between expectations and retention, persistence, and student success, as well as why understanding student expectations is important to supporting student success. This research study explored these concepts from a lens of Generational Theory, which includes the notion that each generation has differing values, experiences of life events and motivational factors. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the potential differences between how work-study and non-work-study student employees are trained, professionally developed, and evaluated in Student Affairs departments within the State University of New York System during the spring of 2019. The significance and contribution of this study is in the fact that there is not a statistically significant difference between the supervisory practices based on work-study status, yet, the data shows how the field can make improvements on the student employee experience as a whole, regardless of student employee type.

The Student Affairs literature contains numerous approaches and strategies for bridging the gap between Student and Academic Affairs on college campuses. The use of student affairs professionals as instructors of credit-bearing courses is one example of such collaborative efforts. The student affairs literature identifies student affairs professionals as educators. While most college campuses use student affairs to teach courses, few student affairs professionals teach credit-bearing courses. As a phenomenological study, this research examines the culture, structure and politics of Departments of Student Affairs as seen through the experiences of Chief Student Affairs Officers.
