Pivoting To Deeper Experiences In Higher Education Classrooms, Danielle M. Pratt, Daniel W. Eadens
Pivoting To Deeper Experiences In Higher Education Classrooms, Danielle M. Pratt, Daniel W. Eadens
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In higher education, pivoting quickly to a fully virtual experience online in the midst of a global pandemic is an adventure. There are marked differences between the online experience for a student who was already in a web-delivered course versus one that started face-to-face and quickly pivoted to an online setting. Some assignments, lessons, and courses are easily delivered in alternate formats while other learning opportunities are much more difficult to transition for online delivery. For example, assignments that involve internships or in-person experiences had to shift dramatically, be delayed, or cancelled. Beyond the experiences within the higher education classroom, …

The last three decades of board research has embarked on various aspects of school boards (Alsbury, 2008b; Delagardelle, 2008; Resnick & Bryant, 2010; Strauss, 2018) including characteristics of effective boards (Alsbury & Gore, 2015; Dervarics & O’Brien, 2016), importance of targeted school board trainings (Cook, 2014; Gann, 2015; Hess & Meeks, 2010; Plough, 2014; Pollard, 2012; Reimer, 2015; Weiss, Templeton, Thompson, & Tremont, 2014; Wilkins, 2015), boards and student achievement (Blasko, 2016; Brenner, Sullivan, & Dalton, 2002; Ikejiaku, 2000; Lorentzen, 2013; Peterson, 2000; Saatcioglu & Sargut, 2014; Shelton, 2010), board behaviors (Bradley, 2013; Choi, 2013; Gates, 2013; Gomez, 2013; Murray, …

Supervision Matters For College Students: Relationships Between Employment Type And Student Outcomes., Daniel Eadens, Justin Hultman
Supervision Matters For College Students: Relationships Between Employment Type And Student Outcomes., Daniel Eadens, Justin Hultman
EGS Content
Although student persistence is an important metric for higher education administrators and working is pervasive among those who attend college, the extent to which work supervisors may impact students who work while attending college through interactions is underexplored. Thus, this study examines the relationship between supervisor interactions and student outcomes in relation to type of employment, academic persistence, and competencies. The literature review indicates the relationship between type of employment and academic persistence is important and interactions may provide useful benefits. However, interactions within the type of employment experience is lesser known. The study site for this research is Alpha …

Making Rural Schools Safer., Daniel Eadens, Larry Walker, Vasily Yurin

Extreme violence is in our communities and sometimes flows into our schools. Read no further than the local newspapers if you want to see the impact on campus: physical violence, serious injury, suicide, mental crises, and threats with deadly weapon. In fact, the first documented school shooting in this country occurred in the year 1764 in rural Pennsylvania (Keenan & Rush, 2016). Unfortunately, shootings continue to plague our society and occur on rural school campuses today. Are rural schools safe? Is there a way to better predict school violence so it can be prevented? What kind of rural schools are …

Broader Thinking In Educational Leadership Decisions, Daniel Eadens, Christian Olson
Broader Thinking In Educational Leadership Decisions, Daniel Eadens, Christian Olson
EGS Content
Universities and colleges are facing a variety of threats that impede traditional policy and decision-making. Institutional silos sometimes make collaboration and cohesion very difficult (Hanover Research, 2014, p. 20; Kelderman, 2016; Lederman, 2013). As institutions lose funding and political capital while struggling to collaborate, new policies and ways of thinking must be explored and implemented (Lederman, 2013). The goal of this article is to demonstrate that a policy of broader thinking is one method that can aid higher educational leaders in finding solutions; broader thinking is operationalized by finding ways to decrease wasteful spending by avoiding common pitfalls, using common …

Motivational Factors For Pursuing Degrees In Educational Administration., Myron Labat, Daniel Eadens, Cherie Labat, Danielle Eadens
Motivational Factors For Pursuing Degrees In Educational Administration., Myron Labat, Daniel Eadens, Cherie Labat, Danielle Eadens
EGS Content
Graduate students from a southern state were surveyed to analyze their motivations for pursuing a degree in educational administration. The researchers also examined whether there were differences in the reported motivations based on race. According to NCES (2003-2004) only 10.6% of all public school principals were African American while 16.8% of the students they served were of the same race. Understanding that African Americans are underrepresented in school leadership positions as compared to their Caucasian counterparts, the researchers sought to explore whether Caucasians were encouraged to pursue school leadership credentials more often than African Americans. Statistical analysis revealed no significance …

Making The Case For Arizona School Board Training., Daniel Eadens, Nicholas Clement, Michael Schwanenberger, Danielle Eadens
Making The Case For Arizona School Board Training., Daniel Eadens, Nicholas Clement, Michael Schwanenberger, Danielle Eadens

Some school boards suffer from deep-seated problems (Hess, 2010) and one of the danger signs is too little professional development (Dervarics & O'Brien, 2011). Unfortunately, extreme minimal requirements to be certified as a board member such as only being a registered voter and a resident (ASBA, 2015; TASB, 2015; CABE, 2015; GSBA, 2015; & NYSSBA, 2015) coupled with the need for highly specialized skill sets (Rice et al., 2000) leaves a large gap. Lee and Eadens (2014) found this disconnect between minimal board legal qualifications and the multifaceted skills needed to be effective board members creates a highly compelling argument …
Impact Of Principal Emotional Intelligence On Teacher Perceptions Of School Climate, Ashley Allred, Myron Labat, Daniel Eadens, Cherie Labat, Danielle Eadens
Impact Of Principal Emotional Intelligence On Teacher Perceptions Of School Climate, Ashley Allred, Myron Labat, Daniel Eadens, Cherie Labat, Danielle Eadens
EGS Content
The purpose of this research study was to analyze the impact of principals’ emotional intelligence on the perceptions that teachers have of their school’s climate. The Organizational Health Inventory for Middle Schools (OHI-M) served as the assessment for teachers’ perceptions of the school climate, or the overall health of the organization. Principals’ emotional intelligence competencies were assessed using the Mayer Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test version 2, hereinafter referred to as the MSCEIT. Participants of the study included 22 principals of middle schools in Mississippi. There was an average of 45 teachers employed at each middle school. A Pearson product-moment correlation …
