The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions to student learning from K–12 to universities and continues to manifest negative effects on students. To better understand the challenges our students face and how those obstacles have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we surveyed our undergraduate ecology students who ranked obstacles to learning they experience in technology, learning environment, and economic security. The majority of respondents report conditions have worsened since the onset of the pandemic. Per the U.S. Census Bureau (n.d.), a rural area is “any population, housing, or territory NOT in an urban area.” Specifically, a rural area is defined as the area of 5 to 25 miles from an urban area (Geverdt, 2015). Twelve administrators at Michigan Upper Peninsula (U.P.) high schools participated in 12 separate structured interviews to identify programs, services, and approaches to address trauma-related outcomes. Participants were three U.P. superintendents, eight principals, and one Intermediate School District (ISD) social worker who described a convergence of factors affecting assessment measures of programs, services, and approaches to address student trauma-related outcomes in U.P. high schools. Since 1998, the rural schools in Lesotho have been performing relatively poorly in the Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) Examinations in comparison with the high schools studied in the urban areas (Senekal, 2005: 1). It is the researcher’s opinion that many schools in the rural areas experience difficulties when attempting to attract learners because parents have generally lost confidence in those schools. This report was commissioned by the Institute of Applied Language Studies of the Edith Cowan University in April 1991. Funds had been made available to Edith Cowan by the Department of Employment Education and Training for the 1991 academic year to survey the access to higher education of disadvantaged people in rural areas of Western Australia. Funds were also available to provide for a pilot Bridging Program for disadvantaged persons to enable their entry to courses at post secondary education level.
