Modern feminist discourse has struggled with a certain dilemma: the paradoxes of makeup and fashion. These two topics pose questions from both viewpoints. One may ask: are we meant to support makeup as an industry and hobby, to take pride in our skillfully groomed brows and pretty dresses that make us feel more beautiful? Or are our cultural notions of beauty something to fight against--another means of control, forcing us to force more on appearances than we should?

Four years ago, the College of Applied Sciences and Agriculture published a booklet on careers for women in the applied sciences. It came out shortly after the reorganization of the College in recognition of the low number of young women pursuing careers in math and science, and in acknowledgment of a vision for the future - a vision that included more women in the applied sciences.

The so-called PC agenda on women's studies, ethnic studies, gay and lesbian issues, Eastern history, and the recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty has attracted considerable heat on may of our nation;s compuses - even though PC-ism occupies the attention of just a small miniority of individuals on both sides of the issue.

Last spring, students in a Child Development and Family Relations Research Methods class conducted a random survey among third- and fourth-year male students at the University of Maine to begin to determine the rate of sexual harassment on campus and the men's perceptions of sexual harassment. The 14-women who designated the survey were well-versed in the liturature concerning sexual harassment. All of them had first-hand knowledge of harassmenet.

The lecture hall was abuzz as the students filed into Sandy Caron's class. They knew there would be a guest lecturer, but few were prepared for who walked through the door. At first the woman appeared shy and hesitant. In December 1987, President Dale Lick commissioned a Task Force on the Status of Women at the University of Maine. The Task Force submitted its report on June 1, 1988. Its findings and conclusions expressed serious concerns related to each area of its charge: (1) the distribution, retention, compensation, advancement, and representation of women at the University and (2) the organizational processes and climate affecting women at the University. The one hundred and four (104) recommendations suggested specific actions to address the concerns defined in the Task Force's findings. The major findings of the Task Force on the Status of Women are summarized in the following pages in two parts. In the first we respond to our charge to review data concerning the current status of women in relation to their numbers, distribution, retention, compensation, advancement, and representation at all levels. The evidence here consists primarily of information the University routinely collects and analyzes; the data are reasonably complete and accurate. They also indicate clearly the presence of barriers to the full participation of women in the life of the University.
