The purpose of this project was to create a yearlong unit for social studies that any teacher could pick up and implement into their classroom. It was designed using second grade standards, but can be modified for use in other grade levels. The units are integrated into all subject areas with the goal of teaching students about the community in which they live. It also was designed to create in the classroom an understanding of cultures different from their own. This project is an exploration of the large amount of community resource possibilities in the form of field trips and guest speakers that the Seattle area social studies teacher has available. This resource will aid teachers in selecting and evaluating field trips. The scope of this project lends to the realization of the goal: to provide a product that is informative, educational, and useful. A review of the literature of effective field trips and guest speakers is included. There has been a double purpose in preparing and writing this thesis. One purpose was to meet the needs of the teachers and pupils of North Central Washington for materials to be used in carrying out local units in the social subjects fields. A second purpose was to provide for the interests that children have in other cultures, such as the study of American Indian life; of information and data concerning pioneer life, and to foster and appreciation of what the generation before has done to make life in North Central Washington what it is today.
