The content of this document represents a review of the best practices and principles in competency-based dental and allied dental education. This information is offered in the spirit of collegiality with the intent of improving the allied dental education in general and the dental hygiene education in particular in Jordan. The chapter discusses science teaching in the secondary school in Brazil, with a focus on the College Pedro II. The imperial College was founded in 1837 as a model institution to be emulated by public and private secondary schools in the provinces. The paper presents observations and data on science education at the national level and a description of science teaching in the College during the XIX century. Attention is given to the curriculum, the textbooks adopted in the science courses, and the relationship between secondary science education and the entrance examinations to the medical, law and engineering faculties. This project will help young people to understand the characteristics that make individuals “heroes.” In learning about César E. Chávez’s life and values, students will learn about history, self determination, help for the needy, and actions that promote equity and justice. They will develop a sense of what it means to contribute to society and how they may make a difference. Students will also identify ways in which they can incorporate these characteristics into their own lives and recognize heroes in their community. Participation in the Chávez inspired service-learning project will promote academic learning, civic responsibility, and personal/social development.

From 1995 to 1999, as a teacher educator in Pakistan teaching on professional development programs, my colleagues and I were able to address some needs and interests of primary school teachers. After obtaining a degree in teacher education I was better equipped with the skills required for designing, implementing, and evaluating the curriculum.
