To meet the changing needs of the Spatial Information Sciences industry and cognisant of the declining numbers of undergraduate students in Geomatics, the Spatial Information Sciences Group at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland, has recently developed a new conversion Masters (MSc) programme in Geospatial Engineering. The aim of the Games Development Mentoring programme is to provide students with access to professional advice on; workflows, project management, professional development and an awareness of current requirements in the Games industry.

The advantages of the Mentoring Programme are that it provides students with valuable access to mentoring from recognised industry experts. This real-world experience is essential in order to develop the student’s professional skills. It also inspires students and provides them with an opportunity to develop a network of professional contacts which ultimately improves their employment prospects once they graduate.

In 2011 the Department of Education and Skills in Ireland published its forward looking document ‘National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030’. That document focused on restructuring the higher education system as a key action in ensuring Ireland’s Economic Development and the creation of an ‘Innovation Island’.
