Diversity Conference

Dr. Fry

Dr. Odunuga

Dr. Fry and Dr. Odunuga are two very different people. Yet the two share a passion for teaching chemistry and a desire to bring out the best in their students. Since 2016 the two have co-taught chemistry lectures and laboratories, and in this presentation they share their experiences and the benefits of diverse co-teaching. Diverse co-teaching naturally provides students, faculty and staff with a transformational experience, and serves as a universal platform for integrating various groups, promoting collegiality and performing assessment.

Design Of A Robust Undergraduate Biochemistry Laboratory Course Based On A Modified And Expanded Bovine Serum Albumin Purification Scheme, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Nicholas Cheatwood, John Mullins, Michele Harris

Symposium on Arts and Research

The ASBMB curriculum for an undergraduate degree recommends a set of skills that can be acquired only through laboratory courses and research experience. Based on a previously reported purification scheme for BSA (Odunuga and Shazhko, 2013), we designed a robust, reproducible, cost-effective, safe and enquiry-based undergraduate biochemistry laboratory course that encompasses many of the skill-sets recommend-ed in the ASBMB curriculum. Our work not only modi-fied certain steps in the scheme, it also included addi-tional steps to enhance student learning and skill ac-quisition. Salt precipitation, ion exchange and size ex-clusion chromatography were employed by students to purify BSA from cow plasma. …

Stem, Steam, And German Language Acquisition: Modified Project-Based Learning In A German Conversation Course, Louise Stoehr Apr 2017

Stem, Steam, And German Language Acquisition: Modified Project-Based Learning In A German Conversation Course, Louise Stoehr

Symposium on Arts and Research

This project describes an investigation into the efficacy of employing a modified project-based learning model to enhance the presentation and conversation skills of students in German 235: Intermediate German Conversation. Unlike usual language conversation courses that rely on expensive textbooks and focus on reading selections followed by discussion questions, GER 235 sought to engage students in a journey of discovery as they explored topics typically more at home in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses (STEM) and that were supplemented by the arts: STEAM. The impetus for this course developed out of a teaching unit that I created on the …

Mathematics Career Carnival: Integration Of Content, Pedagogy, & Authentic Learning, Mark S. Montgomery, Paula Griffin

Symposium on Arts and Research

This project is the result of the integration of online methods and field experience to give students a unique opportunity in field experience that we can control and assess rather than “assume” that mentors and placements around the state are modeling the way we believe mathematics should be taught and assessed.

Blue Jeans Go Green (Bjgg) Denim Recycling Program: Fusing The Content Of Two Courses, Jamie Cupit Apr 2015

Blue Jeans Go Green (Bjgg) Denim Recycling Program: Fusing The Content Of Two Courses, Jamie Cupit

Bright Ideas Conference

A creative teaching strategy was implemented in the fall of 2014 in order to fuse the content of two independent fashion merchandising courses. Blue Jeans Go Green Denim Recycling Program was created by Cotton Incorporated in 2006 as a call-to-action to recycle denim on college campuses. The recycled denim would be given new life as UltraTouch Denim Insulation and a portion of it donated for use in civic buildings and for communities in need across the U.S. The two fashion merchandising courses included Advanced Textiles and Fashion Promotion which shared the same enrolled students.

“This Is A Picture Of…Exploring Pre-Service Teachers Experiences ‘Living A Hybrid Curriculum’, Christina Sinclair, Jay Thomton

Bright Ideas Conference

Examination of pre-service teachers’ (PSTs) learning and use of Models-Based Instruction (MBI) is a relevant direction in efforts to transform physical education through increased physical education teacher effectiveness. In an effort to help PSTs learn MBI, Oslin, Collier, and Griffin (2001) suggested physical education teacher education programs utilize a ‘Living the Curriculum’ approach allowing PSTs to experience MBI within their teacher education programs.

A Description Of The Effectiveness Of A Guided Reading Internship Project, Jacqueline Hooten Huntley Apr 2011

A Description Of The Effectiveness Of A Guided Reading Internship Project, Jacqueline Hooten Huntley

Undergraduate Research Conference

The intent of the literacy project during my Internship I for elementary education students is to give teacher candidates the opportunity to work with a guided reading small group. The pre-test, post-test project became an action research study that utilized quantitative data to determine the effectiveness of the guided reading program on the literacy growth of three students. The teacher candidate worked with three randomly assigned students from a first grade classroom in a rural east Texas elementary school twenty minutes a day, three days a week, for a six-week period.
