This paper will address the “integrating diverse disciplinary approaches to teaching, learning and SOTL” conference thread. My original question was simply how to get the students to spend more time editing their research papers to obtain a higher quality paper. This led to the idea of creating an iMovie research paper where the students would have to narrate their text, add images, and music for a final project. I put together a proposal requesting iPads for my seven students in Modern Philosophy. The final iMovie project brought together various disciplines since it required the student to find both visual components …

In this paper, we describe our experiences in designing and delivering a course that blends together design, engineering, and entrepreneurship through the use of mobile devices. The significance of this work is in advocating for and demonstrating the motivational and educational benefits of using a mobile platform, and describing how to utilize the mobile marketplace to provide an authentic, real-world experience across these three domains.

In the Olin College curriculum, students have significant, early, and continuous exposure to user-oriented design principles. As a result, our students have a very user-centered approach to problem solving that has affected our yearlong, industry-sponsored capstone in several ways. We have reflected on five years of capstone engagements in order to learn how our program has changed because of the design emphasis in our curriculum. Negotiation is defined as an interpersonal process in which two or more parties attempt to allocate scarce resources or resolve a conflict (Pruitt & Carnevale, 1993). Scarce resources and conflict permeate, at varying levels and in numerous forms, all aspects of our personal and professional lives. That said, as an academic subject area, negotiation is something that students of every disciplinary domain should be exposed to as a component of their professional skill development. This study examines the effectiveness of a three-year Masters of Economics Education program developed and delivered through an interdisciplinary partnership between a Northwest University's College of Business and College of Education. The research on the Idaho Economic Fellows Institute clearly supports this format of teacher preparation and/or professional development. Specifically the research showed that the program increased fellows' economic literacy and positively affected the fellows' teaching skills and techniques. There is also strong evidence that the institute influenced the economic content being taught by fellows as well as their students' success on standardized tests. This research project collects demographic, fiscal, and assessment data from Idaho school districts that have a high school and that report senior ACT scores. Analysis of the data indicates statewide correlations between local economic revenue indicators (local revenue per student, household median income, and percentage of local funding per student) and Idaho high school graduating seniors’ composite ACT scores. This research project indicates: (1) A strong relationship between Idaho school districts’ local revenues and their seniors composite ACT scores; (2) A strong relationship between Idaho high schools amount of local revenue per student and minimal ACT benchmarks not met by …

This paper explores the extent to which states are meeting their obligation to provide adequate educations for their minor citizens. It reveals the current mismatch between children identified in the federal census and those enrolled in any form of schooling. Currently, approximately 1.7 million children (3.5% nationwide) within compulsory education age ranges are not enrolled with any type of educational institution. Hawaii, at 17.5%, has the largest percentage of “missing children.” These “missing” children lie at the intersection of two policy implementing bodies, departments of education and departments of health and welfare. Unfortunately, most states cannot reconcile the number of …

This decision-based critical incident involves the dilemma faced by a college student who is made the manager of a restaurant, placing her above her two close friends who also work in the restaurant. The three women not only work together, but they go to college together. Two of three friends are assistant managers for a short time, but when one is demoted and the other is promoted, the change in the professional relationship threaten the personal dynamics. Things come to a boil, as it were, when the newly minted manager delegates responsibility for the restaurant’s inventory to the restaurant’s non-managerial …
