Background/Context. Transfer is a core function of community colleges; this is a critical point given that these institutions serve as the primary pathway into postsecondary educa- tion for Black men. However, too few Black men identify transfer as a primary goal and/or eventually transfer to a 4-year college or university.

Purpose: Using Nora and Rendón’s (1990) research on transfer predisposition as a theoreti- cal guide, this study investigated determinants of Black male community college students’ pre- disposition to transfer from a community college to a 4-year university. “Cool Posing” On Campus: A Qualitative Study Of Masculinities And Gender Expression Among Black Men At A Private Research Institution., Frank Harris Iii, Robert T. Palmer, Laura E. Struve

Using theories and concepts relating to the social construction of Black masculinity and male gender role conflict, the authors explored contextualized meanings of masculinities and corresponding behavioral expressions among 22 Black men enrolled at a private research university. The concepts of toughness, aggressiveness, material wealth, restrictive emotionality, and responsibility underscored the meanings the participants ascribed to masculinities. Participants expressed these concepts behaviorally through their pursuit of leadership and academic success, homophobia, and the fear of femininity, and through the sexist and constrained relationships they experienced with women.
