Increasing stakeholder concerns about sustainability have recently led businesses to consider environmental, economic, and social issues in supply chain management. This three-component approach to sustainability is known as the “triple bottom line.” The triple bottom line was developed in the 1990s with the intention of providing a framework for evaluating organizational economics along with social and environmental impacts. One of the first definitive works on the concept of the sacred was Emile Durkheim’s 1912 work The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life. In it, he defined the sacred in opposition to the profane. The next major work on the sacred was not until Mircea Eliade’s The Sacred and the Profane, in 1959. A review of the literature since that time reveals that the thinking on the sacred/profane dichotomy has changed little since these seminal writings. I have found that many students are seriously lacking skill in this area and have little recognition of its importance. The authors propose a phased, three-tiered approach for incorporating enterprise system software into the curriculum. The courses in each tier have different objectives and requirements. By phasing in the tiers over time, maximum student exposure and minimal course disruption is achieved. The authors illustrate this approach by discussing the on-going implementation of SAP R/3 into the curriculum at one university.

The CBE Auction Database is the result of an assignment designated by Professor Auer in the College of Business and Economics. At the start of the 1999 Winter quarter Database Development course, Auer announced to the class he was replacing his usual quarterly work load with a sort of "experimental" hands-on assignment. He believed the class would greatly benefit from an opportunity to build a "real-world" database, rather than his trademark textbook assignments.
