This qualitative dissertation study explored how multilingual/multicultural immigrant high schoolers’ multilayered identities intersected and shaped their experiences and imagined futures. I used intersectionality as a social action theory (Hill-Collins, 2019) as a theoretical lens to examine how multiple aspects of multilingual/multicultural immigrant high schoolers’ identities, such as socioeconomic status (SES), race, ethnicities, immigration, linguistic, social, and cultural backgrounds intersected and affected their perceptions of self, in and out of school experiences, access to resources and support, and imagined futures. In 2018, the faculty and leaders at Achievement First East Brooklyn High School set out to rethink what it meant to support our most vulnerable students, including those overaged and under-credited and/or with IEP's. The session will include the achievements, challenges and key takeaways for the “Evergreen Success Program,” an initiative that provides targeted socioemotional support and differentiated academic intervention through teacher development, school design, family partnerships and student voice. This presentation will review both common and uncommon contributions to educational gaps facing students of color from Kindergarten to Post Secondary. Relevant historical events and the healing needed from these events for both students and educators will be explored. Student achievement initiatives for minoritized student populations in K-12 and post secondary institutions will be discussed.
